Once in there, I wonder if it’s worth considering reattaching with something that will allow you to pop
it off in the future...without re-removing the entire dash again?

So the veneer can be purchased then? Any particular outlet to look at?

I've considered replacing the trim with maybe vinyl, but wouldn't mind trying my hand at restoring the wood trim, especially if I don't have to give up my first and last born to do so.

At one point it was still available from Jaguar, but no more. You might try Pauls Jaguar in Florida, they have a lot of XJS trim things.
