Default XJS-C

Hi.. I live in NZ and am having trouble working out the year of manufacture of a Jaguar XJS-C that I am selling for a friend.. It is listed as a 1980 on nz records but has been deregistered at some time so this may be incorrect.. It is a V12 targa top with a rear seat.. Did they even have this configuration in 1980 .. It has BL on the manufacturers plate but I think the vin is a New Zealand issued one as it doesn't seem to line up with Jag Vin numbers.. Vin number on Nz records is 7A899010796103232.. It also has a chassis number of JNAEW3AC103232 and engine number 15416.. Any information you could provide on this vehicle would be hugely appreciated.. Nobody over here can tell me anything about it but some people have said it is later than a 1980 model.. Many thanks..Mike..

Welcome to the forum Mike,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJS forum. This is the place to post questions about your model.

I think your chassis number decodes as follows:

J = Manufacturer: Jaguar
N = Model Range: XJS
A = Class: Base Spec
E = Body Variant: Coupe
W = Engine Variant: 5.3 litre
3 = Transmission & Steering: Auto/RHD
A = Model Year: 1980
C = Emission Control System: Middl East - Emissions D
103232 = Production Serial Number

The VIN number you quote from NZ records does not follow the international standard but the US used to allocate second VIN's on import and NZ may have done the same.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Mike,

VIN 103232 was a vehicle made in late 1979. So it's either a 1979 car that's been converted into a Cabriolet or it's an original Jaguar Cabriolet that has been "given" the VIN plate of an early car. However, that engine number is also a "pre-HE" number, so that would tend to indicate that it is an early car that has had an after-market conversion to a Cabriolet.

If you could post some pics of the car, we could probably help you identify if it's a converted car or not.

Hope that helps

Paul
