Default XJS Chrome

Hi
Can anyone tell me when the front bumpers changed?

My XJS 4.0 1992 need new bumpers but I am not sure which model years
will fit. I am looking to find second hand as re chroming quotes seem high
to me. My car has headlamp washers but not too bothered if the new bumper
does not have these fitted.

Any advice welcome

from what I can tell you should be okay with any facelifted XJS. I think the front bumper gets changed to a painted plastic, but the chrome is retained.

I think the chrome from a pre-facelift will work, but if you look pretty much all facelift cars use the washer to join the pieces of the chrome together, where the older cars have a rubber seal. The shape looks the same to me, but you may as well go for the facelift car and retain the same look.

Hopefully someone can confirm

XJSJack,

In theory, the chromes from introduction of facelift in 1991 (VIN 179737) up to introduction of Big Bumpers in 1993 (VIN 188105) will fit your car. However, although some of the chromes will fit different years, we have seen slight differences in the profiles which can give problems if trying to fit parts together of different years.

If you want to be precise, go by VIN number as per Jaguar's website here:

Bumper With Absorbers-Front - Parts For XJS from (V)179737 to (V)226645 | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

Good luck

Paul

XJSJack,

Sorry, just to add, the bumpers, bumper beams, mounts, trims, vents and even wings are different from VIN 188105.

So you need bumpers and chromes from 179737 to 188105, although there are changes to the part numbers for the chromes even within that range. However, if you are changing all 3 chrome parts separately, you should be OK. Be aware that when you take off the bumper, there is every likelihood that the beam will be rusted underneath.

Thanks for the ebay advice but thats where my question started really.

Looking on ebay there are lots of chrome sections for pre facelift but not
any for the later models.

I was hoping a pre facelift bumper would fit.

XJSJack,

There are a couple of early facelift chrome corners with powerwash cutouts on ebay at the moment.

If you're after bumpers or corners try ringing one of the known breakers of XJS eg:

Grublogger 07771 508614
JustXJS 07940 998199
Clarkes 01435 863800

Good luck

Paul
