Default XJS Door Hinge Spring - Install

My 93 XJS original door (LH) hinge spring had broken. Got another from a parts XJS. A local Jag-Tech and I could not determine how to install the spring due to limited working space and the torque required to snap it in place. Does anyone know just how to install this spring? Of course, buying a whole door hinge assembly might (?) resolve the issue - and this would be very labor intensive, as well as costly. Any suggestions and/or methods would be appreciated.

I believe it is next to impossible to renew the spring with the hinge on the car. But as always, I am quite possibly wrong!

Changing the entire hinge is not that bad:
  1. open door
  2. remove door card
  3. remove heel level trim on A post bottom in footwell
  4. remove under dash (shin level) trim
  5. now you have access to the hinge nuts on both hinges, three each side of the hinge, door and A post
  6. loosen all nuts on sprung hinge, loosen DOOR side nuts on the other hinge
  7. Chock door carefully and extensively with jack and wood spacers, or have strong helper standing by
  8. undo all nuts on sprung hinge, undo DOOR nuts on other hinge
  9. fix hinge off car or replace, then mount new/repaired sprung one to the A post, using the marks the old one made as a careful guide
  10. you now have two hinges on the A post
  11. mount door also using hinge marks on the door as a guide do up nuts finger tight, then tighten one on each hinge inside the door
  12. If you are lucky the door will be fine. If not, a little adjustment using a jack for up and down and loosening the hinge in the door a touch, etc etc and you should be OK
  13. tighten all and replace trim and door card
I have done this, a couple of hours with a helper should do it;

Greg

From my parts car, but the breakers all have them, loads in the UK if nowhere else.

OK, Friday the 13th
almost 100K miles on the car, open the door to come to work and a loud bang and a metallic tinkle .... looked down and this was on the door sill

this begs the question where do I get a door spring?

I think If I remove the fender I can get in replaced...

It is that or take the whole hinge out....

found sources for the Hinge ranging from 250 on down to 117... but no spring... I stop by some auto parts stores on the way home...
I have rehearsal to night and tomorrow morning and a performance tomorrow night
all in all a bad week end to chase parts down...

The hinge spring is not sold separately. It is a part of the entire hinge. I am the XJS owner that started this thread in 2013. I ended up buying 2 XJS hinges from a XJS parts dealer in the UK. The good thing about buying from him, you are buying the passenger side hinges which don't have that much wear and tear.. Greg's response (above) is how to remove the hinge. My work was done by a XJS technician.
