do you know where i will find the factory alarm on the car. I have a fob on the keyring but have never used it as it does not work, so i lock the car via the keys, i would assume this is meant to lock the car and activate the alarm.

I had a similar problem. My keyless fob was dead also. I replaced the battery in the fob and reset the alarm and the remote worked like new!

There was another thread about the alarm position and had pictures.

Is your 1991 the face lift model '92 MY...if so :-
Look in the boot (trunk) and open the right hand panel behind the rear light. If you see a big white connector behind the panel you have the factory alarm setup. Now if it connected you will have the alarm, it is the black box below the rear light fixed by the lower light fixing nuts. To see if its the problem simple unplug the large white connector. If you would like to use the alarm and remote locking then replace the remote battery, re-connect the connector which should make the alarm beep. After each beep press the remote once (up to 5 times before it stops).
The alarm backup battery is no longer available !!!. It sits in a small box at the bottom of the alarm housing also fixed by the 2 nuts. Also there should be the "bump" sensor that can be adjusted for sensitivity.

PS check on Ebay.co.uk for remote. When open you should see the frequency printed on the circuit board ie 433. This is important when ordering a new one. Mine has part no. DAC7990 printed on the back

Appreciate this is an extremely old thread, but just wanted to say thanks to Malc for the details above. After some months of mucking around with the alarms and fobs its started playing up (cutting out, and not starting at all) so I decided to just disconnect it as above!
Cheers Malc...
