Default XJS Front carpet

I noticed that my 94 XJS had front floor mats but under the mats there were no carpet. There are two turnbuckles near the front of the seats that I assume are for the front carpet, am I correct in my thinking? If this is the case, does anyone make replacement carpets for the XJS?

Try Pauls Jaguar in Ft. Lauderdale. Give them a call, and speak to Jeremy. They have official Jaguar carpet material, and good prices compared to others. I'll soon be buying a complete set, plus a couple yards of bulk material for my rear seat/storage box replacement project.

same thing with my 94 xjs. mats with no carpet underneath. I think this is by design?

Another vote for Pauls.
I recently ordered a replacement drivers foot mat from them, and it was perfect in every way. Material, rubber mat, underlayment....very nice product.

Sounds like your cars leaked water onto the carpets at some time and the OP took them out and replaced with mats.

My question on this is which models had fasteners for the mats and which did not? Since the later models with power seats have the metal foot plate in front of the seat to house the wiring and module, where are the mats supposed to attach?
I just ordered new mats and they put grommets in it where their system said it was supposed to have them, but they do not line up with any hole on my wiring cover plate so they will not work for me and I have to get a replacement or refund/order again. *the frustration is real*

I've seen only confusing mixed answers when trying to figure it out by image searches. Some models have the shorter mats+heel pad with turnbuckles, some have the longer mats+no heel pad (only the 1995/1996 celebration models it seems?) and on those I see some with/without hooks/buckles.
Can we try to find a definitive answer on this?!

Benj628,

There are slightly different combinations to those you have mentioned. For example there are short front carpet sections without attached turnbuckles on cars up to very early 1995 production. These use a long hook bar on the underside of the carpet that engages with a metal retainer on the floor and is very prone to breaking its leading edge off the carpet section.

The longer front carpet section design came in just before Celebration designation, I think around 199600 VIN area.

Cheers

Paul

I see. Here is a 1994 from ebay, showing the shorter mat+pad with turnbuckles.
It seems to me the buckles are anchored into the two openings on the metal module housing plate based on their position. My metal floor plate is missing the carpet lining if it ever had it at all??

The mats that American Floor Mats sent me are the long ones, which it sounds like were not originally equipped with fasteners? Yet they put grommets in mine.
The mats that the car came to me with I believe to be the originals, here is a pic if anyone can tell me for certain.
I am going to try to get them to re-make my mats with either no grommets or have them installed where I tell them to based on my measuring so I can install hooks in the metal plate in those two openings and make them work for me.

My floor:

My mat vs. the mat they sent me based on the pattern in their system:

Benj628,

Before they moved to the long mat in 1995 at VIN 1996xx, th earlier cars used a separate piece of carpet over the raised piece in front of the seat. The shorter carpet which sat in the lower recessed floorpan had a long plastic retainer clip on the underside which engages with the long raised 90 degree metal pressing between those two holes. I'll tray and take a pic of mine tomorrow.

Cheers

Paul

So on the last cars they just used one long mat to cover the seat module housings down to the pedals? With no fasteners? My metal housings have old velcro strips on them, but no holes in the mat and no fasteners in the floor.

I think from memory that the retaining plate is that long 90-degree fold of metal with slight cutouts at each end which runs between the small rectangular holes in that metal pressing. A similar length plastic strip sewn to the underside of the carpet then engages with this. The plastic strip is the one that always breaks off.

I'll try and take pics in the next few days.

I see! OKay, I can now confirm that the earlier models had a carpeted metal module housing in front of the seat, with carpet that is attached with turnbuckles, on top of which the mats would have laid.
In the last models they changed to use one long piece of carpet which had the retainer clip to hold in in place on the module housing, and the mat would have laid on top of that.
It is easy to confuse the carpet with the mat. Early carpets were basically mats with turnbuckles, later carpets were one piece with clip underneath.

I'm not sure about the 4.0L but from 1989 Marelli ignition V12 the front passenger footwell carpet is different. When I replaced my carpets the front passenger mat needed to be cut to fit.

The rear mats also changed when Jaguar changed the seat mounts in 1988.
