Default XJS HE 1985 - Cruise Control Bellows Cover Orientation

i removed my cruise control to gain better access to the top of the engine and I reckon the black cover to the bellows was installed upside down.

Problem is that it is orientated the same way as 95% of the engine bay photos I have seen on the Net.

Can I ask if there are many owners with the cover orientated so the bellows cannot be seen?

Reasons for thinking it's upside down.

Why would you allow the possibility of the bellows jamming by having something fall into it (like my tatty underhood insulation)

The two vacuum chambers to the bellows with the black caps are orientated so that any crap falls into them. (btw do people know there is an oiled sponge inside them)

What is the function of the plastics cover if it sits under the bellows.

parts manual is no help because it shows it sideways.

I had to reseal my bellows at the same time I did plugs and wires. The "cover" I think, is a heat shield and belongs under the bellows. Mine did not have anything in it except a big spring

the bellows cover is designed and illustrated as such to prevent plug leads etc stopping the bellows from working from underneath

those that have it mounted to protect form the bonnet ( hood ) insulation have it on upside down......

but , hey , who cares, lol ( as in does it really matter which way , not trying to diss your question at all...)

I stand corrected - had not thought about the spark plugs.

Excellent Point

Sorry if the question appears trivial

I do recall many cars coming back from the dealers with them under vs. over, that's funny actually, I never really paid any attention to it, as the dealer was the last to do my plugs some 10+ yrs ago according to receipts..

It does look more finished "over" although...

Default Under

100% under. Acts as a heat shield. Worked at a Jaguar dealer for a while. V12 spark plug change about 10 minutes
