Hey guys,
Was wondering if XJS hoods are interchangable between model years? From my own casual observations, they all look the same and any model year would seem to fit any other model year, but would love to get some more info.
Thanks!

I'm referring to the hood. Or, if you prefer, the bonnet. And I'm talking about any variant. I was curious as to whether a hood (regardless of model year or engine size) would fit any model year XJS. Say, for example, if I took the hood off an '88 XJS coupe for use on a later model, would that work?

Just a hunch, but I don't think that would work as easily. The rear on facelift jags is significantly different (more rounded and streamlined) than the rear on pre-facelift jags (boxier and angular). Originally Posted by M90power

The changes to the front end of facelift jags (minus the bumpers and a few other features) were less dramatic.
Most people use to like putting a 3.6 hoods on to V12s, the 3.6 had a bigger bulge going down the middle, they were all interchangable as far as I can remember...
Swapping boot lids was not a problem either, never fitted a pre facelift to a facelift though, why would you! They were terrible....
I have even swapped the doors and side windows...... basically I have taken an early XJS and made it look like a facelift, all very do-able

If I have this wrong...and I might...someone will jump in.
As I recall, Jaguar USA, no doubt in conjunction with Jaguar itself, didn't market a 1981 model year XJS. This relates to the introduction of the HE engine.
Cars built towards the end of calendar year 1980 were still marketed as "1980" cars in the USA....even though they'd typically be "1981" cars by usual model year standards.
The HE production began in spring of '81 and those cars were marketed as 1982 model year in the USA.
The several month gap inbetween was shrugged off as USA dealer has excess XJS inventory on hand....due to very slow sales of the model. Who cared about the lack of a "1981" model year when the 1980 cars sitting unsold?
All of this allowed the excitement and whiz bang marketing of the "new and improved 1982" HE model.
As an aside, sort of, I think Chevrolet skipped one model year with the Corvette for similar reasons. Was it 1983? I'm a bit ashamed that I can't remember for sure.
Cheers
DD
