Default XJS Pre-facelift 1988 Nearside Rear Quarter

Hiya,

I've recently purchased a project car that needed more work than I originally hoped it would (not surprising given the age), I need to repair the nearside rear quarter panel which has a few bad bits at the moment. Pretty much rusty all the way along under the glass with a rather big hole (?) about 1/2 inch across. There is more rust bubbling through to the surface on a small area at the back where the boot meets the wing that doesn't look too bad and may be sorted without much reconstruction.

Could anyone tell me 2 things...

1). Can I get a rear quarter panel to just replace this piece cut the old out and weld the new one into place or.

2). Would it be better to just cut away the bad weld new metal in its place and clean it up then spray the area?

Of course you may have a much better idea so any advice is appreciated.

Wes

This sort of seen rust is usually only the beginning, with the worst still unseen.

I would be going over the car with a fine tooth comb aka screw driver, looking for under side rust. It might be uneconomical to repair if the rust is very bad.

I've checked round the sills and in the arches and under the car haven't had it up on ramps so there's bits that were hard to see but overall it seems to be pretty sound underneath. So fingers crossed i won't find excessive rust but if i do i will have to scrap it and sell the parts.

Also check the front subframe, front and rear jacking points and the inner fenders, in the engine bay just below where the shock absorber mount is, these are known rust spots
