1994 Jaguar XJS convertible 6 cyl, 70K miles

This is going to sound weird.

I assume turning the temperature control knob fully CCW would select the coldest setting and turning it CW selcts the warmest setting (as evidenced by the change in air temperature discharged at the outlets.

So if I have the control set at coldest setting and put on the knob, the knob points at six o'clock position which is 85 degrees.

Is there an explantion? To my knowledge the system has never been apart.
