Default XJs Trip Computer

I obnoxiously cracked my trip computer on my 1994 xjs while in the process of redoing the wood. Still not sure how to remove the thing.

I was thinking that now would be the time to tupgrade (downgrade) to one with the fault codes. is this possible? There are many older 86-91 Jag trip computers available used in the $50 range. It looks like the same connector, after looking at a photo of the one I have. It looks like a similar size as well.

While were on the topic, anyone know how to remove the trip computer? How to replace the bulb?

If you have the same one as me, the bulb replacement will be easy once you get the thing out.

Pull out the two double button clusters on either side of the trip computer. They are held in place by pressure clips. They WILL come out.

The you'll need a 8mm (I believe) socket to unscrew the bolts keeping the trip computer in on either side through the new holes left by the recently removed double button clusters.

Once you get those bolts out, the computer will come out, but you'll have to pull as they are still being held in place by pressure clips.

The bulbs will then be easily accessible.

I replaced them with LEDs. The old mini-bulbs made the trip computer run hot to the touch.

Good luck.

Sort of resurrecting this old thread because I am not sure how to remove the trip computer on Morris, who is an 89 instead of a 1994. Is it the same deal for an 89 as a 94? Remove the two closest push-button switches from either side of the computer? Do I just pull on them until they pop off (and not break off)?

Computer is on the fritz. I do think it's just the connectors, though, they need to be cleaned.

And Morris prefers to be referred to as a person. Anytime I call Morris an "it", something seems to break.

On a pre-facelift the computer just pulls out. It has springs each side. Popping out the nearest buttons makes it a bit easier to see what's what and get to the loom.

Thanks Greg!

Pulled out computer, cleaned out connectors, re-attached. Unfortunately., every time I hit the ignition on the car, it resets, sometimes going to the 8.8:8.8 thing. Sometimes the buttons don't work either.

Nuts! Looks like I need to replace the computer after all.
