Default 2 issues I need help with if poss

Hi. 2 probably unconnected issues. First. When nice and hot, when accelerating, I get a rattle, jingling noise from the engine. Happens around 1500rpm. Would say def not exhaust related. Could this be pinking? About a month ago I put in some redex fuel cleaner in the car.

Based on above, this evening I put the car in neutral and gave it some beans with the accelerator -theory being giving it a clear out. The rev counter would not go past 4500 rpm. Tried and tried again but no luck. Is this normal or an indicator of something?

Otherwise car car drives Fine!

Ok. 2nd issue not a problem I don’t think as it certainly doesn’t limit itself to 4500 when driving having just taken it down the road!! Any thoughts on the rattle on acceleration would be v much appreciated.

Yep, issue #2 is the rev limiter kicking in when in P or N.

Your profile says XKR 2008 so we assume this is the car in question.

Can you isolate the noise to an area of the engine? Maybe record it and throw it on youtube? A " a rattle, jingling noise from the engine" is hard to diagnose over the internet

Uh, WHY would you rev ANY internal combustion engine over 4500 in neutral? Are you trying to make pistons swap cylinders?

What octane fuel are you running in it?

Hi. Recording the noise will be near on impossible as only upon acceleration and would not be picked up through a recording. Running on 95RON. Car is not an XKR 08, it is an XK 06. Will have to change that - not sure why that has happened. Best way to describe the noise - if a diesel car pulled away in 2nd gear, it is the rattle from the engine you would hear because they should have pulled away in 1st. Hope that makes sense.

I guess it came from the old ferrari mentality of the italian tune up. I know when I would take out my old 308 GTB which was a 4 carb V8 that after warm up I would do a few runs up to 7000 rpm to clean up the plugs. With 4 2-barrel webers the tune was always a little rich so this was an easy way to clean up the plugs. With a modern day FI car the ECU has more control over the F/A ratio compared to the weber setup. Always did it under load as opposed to sitting and pumping the go peddle. Just my thoughts here.

Are you sure it isn't trans or torque converter related? Otherwise you should be able to duplicate it while locked in another gear.

Super short stroke small displacement low rotating mass didn't get hurt revving hard. Kind of like bolting 12 chain saws to the transmission.

hi, not sure what you mean. I do not think this is specific to an individual gear, but most noticeable in 4th if I was to take a punt, at around 1500 ish rpm. Can create the noise by momentarily foot on/off gas pedal by bringing up to 1500rpm then dropping below...then repeat. Not sure if I’m making any sense at all.

Ah, you have the XK cat resonance problem. Jaguar fitting a brace that tied the catalytic converter to the bell housing bolts to eliminate the rumbling noise at low RPM's. When I replaced my cats I sent my pair of braces to Finland if memory serves to a member who had the same problem. Somewhere in my build thread is a picture of the little darlings.

A decent muffler shop should be able to fabricate something similar for not too much money. Jaguar wanted a lot of coin for them.

The description sounds like knock/pinking, but the 4.2 engine has knock sensors which should make the ECM change fuelling & ignition parameters to stop it. And the sensors should detect it before you can hear it.

Ranchero50's got it right! I had it fixed when I installed my X-pipe free of charge by the
exhaust shop.
