They are rated at 70 lb. each, but I had the same thought. Maybe I'll go to 5 on each side. Also, I'll try a test with a cable tie today, as it is 20 something degrees outside. I know cold too, I grew up in Allentown and lived for a while in Pittsburgh.

Ah, the tropics compared to my childhood.
Northern Minnesota, where the January HIGHS were around -20f, and that was without sissy windchill. Lows were usually about -40, and the lowest I've personally experienced was -59f. I was 12 and my parents wouldn't let me go outside for a week.

I think long-term degradation through repeated thermal and mechanical stress - and perhaps UV exposure - would be the likely failure mode. Multiple ties are unlikely to fail at the same time so, if you keep an eye on them, you should notice them failing before the plate goes bye-bye.
After replying it did occur to me that 3 or 5 wouldn't matter is they got brittle. I did the test...3 hours at 0 degrees F in the freezer, the tie was still flexible and held firm. Must have learned something in the 60's at Lehigh (mentioned since you are local). UV and time may have an effect.
I’m going to roll the dice, and go plateless on the front. I’ve noticed that about 70% of Teslas are fron plateless. It’s hurts me to ruin the look of my beauty with a plate. But, I did read that the vinyl equivalents as on the Tesla in the picture are legal in my state of Kalifornistan.
How many people have been pulled over for just no plate? Which states enforce? CA is technically 2 plates. With no front plate Tesla’s at every stop sign, front plates seem to be optional. In NorCal, CA enforcement seems to be focused on the 100 mph folks and accidents. Do appreciate that for sure. Lehigh grads (me) may get preferential treatment but don’t plan to test the theory.
My car was originally sold in Fresno, then was in the Bay Area for most it's life according to the service history. It has never had a front plate mounted -- the second plate is still in the trunk and there is no mounting damage on the front. I've been running in SoCal without a front plate for two years without being hassled. In practice.
The two plate law was put into effect for red light cameras, toll roads, and another excuse to stop drivers that profile.
If I ever do get stopped, I'll pay the fine and put this on:
I know a couple of local police and they assure me they do ticket people here in MN. I just checked online. Again, MN but all EV's require 2 plates also. Fine is $115 for first offense.
Been using one of those tow hook plate adapters for almost 10 years (different brand but same idea). Sure, it’s off center and wonky, but no holes drilled.
This discussion fascinates me. As someone who's lived their life in Britain, I can't imagine cars without front number plates. It seems almost part of the car.
I just glanced at the cover of this month's Jaguar Enthusiast, showing the "original" XK. The number plate just looks like it belongs there...
