Default 2007 XKR Convertible Roof issue

I have recently bought this car and joined this happy band of brothers and wondered if anyone could hep me out. The roof retracts fine, but the little cover that is supposed to slide over the workings on the passenger side rear (US car) seems to have jammed and the string broke! Anyone replaced one of these, is it difficult to get the trim off without damaging it? I don't even know which part i need to buy.....I have a photo but can't post attachments yet sorry.

This happened to me on the drivers side last year shortly after I acquired the car. Dealer covered it under warranty. From the way it looks, you've got to take off the rear quarter-panel to get to the thing.

if youre reffering to the retracting door that goes over the hinge mechanism in the front of the toneau, you have to replace the entire inner rear seat casing. this is built and supplied only as an assembly. whats happens most often is someone leans or pushes inadvertantly on that door when the top is down and it breaks the plastic track it rides in. then the door doesnt seat closed properly and can eventually come apart as is your issue. its not hard to replace, only a handfull of nuts and bolts, and unbolting the seat belt to feed it back through the casing

Thanks Brutal, I'll have a look when the weather cools down enough to crawl about back there without soaking the car in sweat...bolts are down the bottom I assume

I am a 6 months owner of a 2008 XK conv and noticed the same thing recently. I will soon ask the dealer to fix it under warranty.

Default Trim piece

It has a string/cable unit on the bottom of it the same as on the side of the glovebox, so the glovebox doesn't slam open. Is the string portion broken, because if it's not look at the other side and see how it's attached. If good tie a knot midway down the string/cable in it and then attach it to something similar to the otherside it should stay in place. You want to create some kind of tension otherwise your going to replace that whole quarter plastic trim. That trim is special order from UK and would probably take a week or so to come. And who's to say it wont come scuffed and scratched. Let me know what you go. Take a picture if you can and post it.

Is it me or does learning that my pride and joy needs lengths of string to operate the roof worry other owners as as well? What next vinegar and brown paper? (old nursery rhyme)
I wonder if Aston Martin/BMW/Mercedes etc have the same?

just as an addendum got it apart and there are 2 tracks in there, it was in the wrong one, got it working but the string is too short now so I actaully just need the white spring and string assy from the bottom of the door and I can fix it. Here is a pic of the part in question out of the car

Cool Cover will not close

Need to repair same part ... On mine the roof retracts fine, but the cover doesn't slide close with opening the top. The string is fine/ not broke ... but the spring has separated from the casing located under the cover. Looking for a part number and / or a close up picture of how the spring is retained in the casing to possibly repair it. Thanks in advance.

You cannot buy just the casing/spring, but you can now obtain a repair kit for this from Jaguar, since it is a common problem and would otherwise require replacing the entire interior quarter panel at prohibitive cost.

The repair is described in a Technical Service Bulletin, #JTB00199. You can download it from https://topix.jaguar.jlrext.com/topi...cle/lookupForm if you purchase a single vehicle subscription for an hour for a few dollars.

There is a repair kit for each side, part numbers C2P21070xxx and C2P21071xxx, where 'xxx' is the trim color code of your interior, which is printed on the placard on the driver's door jamb.

I did this fix a few years ago and posted the solution. What happens is there are 2 tracks the cover moves in. If it gets stuck (broken track) the convertible top going up will push the top tab down into the lower track and it retracts. The next time the top goes up the plastic cover is stuck in the wrong track and the ferrule holding the string loop releases the string. I fixed the track with a bit of plastic and crazy glue. Re connected the ferrule holding the string loop and hooked it back up to match the other side that was good. Good to see there is now a kit for this.

Repair kit part numbers are in WhiteXKR's Post #13, above. Price varies by color.

Somewhat common problem, and an entire thread about it:

Separation of the rear glass from the fabric top is very common. It's caused by the factory adhesive breaking down over time, particularly in hot climates.

That's a long thread and it's worth reading from beginning to end. The good news is that even if you've never fixed anything yourself, this is a very simple, do-it-yourself repair that costs under $100. All it takes is patience, and the right adhesive (Rhino Glue), the right clamps (Suck N Clamps), masking tape, paint stirrer sticks, and rubber gloves. Rhino Glue and Suck N Clamps are available on Amazon. Trust me, you can do it yourself!

There are, of course, other adhesives and methods that are described in that thread. That's why you should read that thread in its entirety and take notes. I explain the mistakes I made using the 3M adhesive (didn't hold and very messy) and how to do it step-by-step including photos.

Don't wait to repair it, as it will continue to get worse and become more difficult to repair if the entire window falls out. First thing to do is to tape the glass to the top to support it while you're waiting for the Rhino Glue and Suck N Clamps to arrive. Don't waste your time looking for them in local stores, as you won't find them. Order them today from Amazon.

Good luck! You can do it!

Stuart

Any idea on how to remove rhino glue that dripped on front dash area during the repair I was doing without I hurting the leather? The rhino glue FYI does not dry clear it actually dries creamy crackled white snd is not smooth lying. Now that’s my input

I had that issue and had it fixed once or twice and happened again so I just lived with it, no string and no little cover on one side.
