Angry 2008 XKR Portfolio- Engine Overheating

New to forum, New to Jaguar ( coming over from Long Time BMW owner )
Have had the XKR for one month now and has already stranded me twice.
When at a stoplight, Engine Overheating Warning Light has come on. First time, had it towed to dealer. Of course, they could not find anything wrong ( all tests were within spec ). Today, did it again forcing me over to the nearest parking lot. Waited 20 minutes, started up, drove home with no problems. Even idled in garage for 10 minutes with no repeat. The only weird thing is that the air conditioning will quit blowing cold air and then minutes later the warning light will illuminate. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas on what could be the cause. I do not like this new found lack of confidence. Thanks!!

maybe the belt which drives the AC and water pump is slipping.

This may be a "sticking" thermostat. It's a fairly inexpensive and easy to replace part - I'd replace it.

If I recall right there is a service bulletin for thermostat replacement for that very reason (it seems they installed them wrong from factory and the seal somehow clops up the thermostat (don't quote me...just what I recall from discussions I read). It is very serious if you are overheating that engine....especially with this out of the blue unrepeatable thing. That just sounds like a major train wreck to me....Especially on the supercharged engine. I would tell the dealer to check for service bulletins...someone here probably has personal experience and knowledge of the bulletin as well...anyone?

I looked through all of the TSB's on ALLDATA and didn't see anything on thermostat replacement or engine overheating. If I can get more information I will do a more thorough search.

I'm new to imports and specifically Jaguar's, how come these cars don't have gauges? I have a 07 Z06 that displays oil temp/pressure in THREE different displays, traditional gauges (analog), in the Drivers Information Center (digital) and in the HUD (graphic). Hell I can monitor tire pressures.

I just don't get the concept what am I missing?

Temperature gauges in most cars are pretty useless. They are calibrated to only show extreme changes in the engine temperature, such as when the car is overheating. This is done so that the driver is not alarmed by fluctuations in temperature that a typical car undergoes during everyday use.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to have a temperature gauge simply so that I know when the car is warmed up. However I have had a few cars overheat on me and the temperature gauge always went from normal to hot within seconds.

Yes, that is largely so. I have the temp gauge in my built-RX-7, always solidly on the middle of the scale. On the other hand, I installed an Apexi computer in the car that allows me to set the fuel curve plus, it monitors everything digitally. The Apexi display will show a variation of 30 F while the turbos are boosting hard vs. he factory temp gauge sits still solidly in the middle.

I would prefer having accurate gauges, just to see if the temps are moving off normal levels, as a warning.

About Jags overheating; how could I forget my first Jag, a late 70s or early 80s vintage XJ6. When ever the temps got to 90F, or above, the car would overheat. There was nothing I could do, short of installing a different radiator and oil cooler. Actually the best thing one could do to that car was a Chevy 350. My worst car ever...

Thanks for the input. I am contacting the dealer on Monday and going to pursue this angle as well as the thermostat. Unfortunately, it is still under warranty otherwise they would have likely drained my wallet and replaced everything possible and eventually fixed it. With factory warranty, unless the head is cracked or some other obvious clue they said there is nothing wrong with it or the famous quote " we cannot reproduce the problem"

Red face Same overheating issue

I am experiencing the same overheating issue on my 2008 XKR. Did you find out what was the issue and how to fix it? I suspect it is the fan control PCM going out and not turn on full fan speed when the car overheats. I already placed the ECT sensor and thermostat. Regards, Yenho

Dealership replaced the entire electric fan assembly at that time. I still have the XKR and it has never had the problem since.
Hope this helps.

Could be a thermostat. I can help you get a more reliable design without the rubber that keeps failing on these thermostats

I already replaced the ECT sensor and thermostat already as these are the cheapest items to replace. But, still have this overheating problem. I suspect it is fan PCM. Monitoring engine temp. to see if fan runs when the overheat warning light comes on again. Waiting for the hotter summer.

Get a cheap Bluetooth adapter and use torque pro , it will tell you coolant and intake temperatures as well as some basic codes you can read with it

If you have access to SDD you could test the fan at various speeds. You don't want to wait till the engine will overheat...

I find the normal operating temp on my 13XKR runs between 195 and 210 degrees Fahrenheit depending upon speed, traffic and ambient temperature.
