Default 2013 XKR - Check Engine Light/Code P0456

Hey All,
So, I got to enjoy one problem-free week with my XKR. I took it to get registered on Fri, and on the way home I had a yellow triangle warning pop up saying "check fuel filler cap" or something to that effect . Once I stopped, I opened and closed the fuel filler cap door. The yellow triangle warning went away, but then the check engine light came on. From researching the forums, I knew that a loose gas cap seems to be the culprit sometimes for the CEL coming on. I tightened the gas cap for several clicks, and drove the car on Fri and Sat hoping that the light would clear. I even filled up with gas, and made sure to tighten the cap for several clicks. The CEL didn't clear. The gas cap looks fairly new and clean, like it may have already been replaced at some point.

On Sat, I ordered an OBD reader from Amazon. BAFX Bluetooth model (~$23) and downloaded Torque (Lite). It showed up today and I connected it up to my XKR. Both of those worked together seamlessly, BTW. Only one code shows up, P0456 - Evaporative Emission Control System leak detected (very small leak, check fuel cap, piping, etc).

Researching on the forums, this looks like a pretty common problem with a variety of causes. I'm going to contact the dealer, since the car has a 1 month/1K mile warranty...hopefully, they'll cover the diagnosis and repair. I want to go ahead and get this fixed, here in MD we do have to get emissions inspections so this will have to be fixed at some point.

Screenshot from Torque (Lite) is below.

I'd appreciate any additional insights the community may have, especially for a newer XKR that has this problem.

Thanks.

Pat

The EVAP system, of which gets messed up by a loose fuel cap, sometimes takes a couple hundred miles to right itself once the cap problem is rectified. It is a finicky beast, that.
The Emissions Inspection in Utah indicates that ONE emissions light can read "Not Ready" and it will still pass emissions. That light is usually the EVAP one, particularly because it takes so long to clear itself.
Go through a couple tanks of fuel, then see wassup afterwords.

Why not just erase the code and see what happens.

Erasing the codes would put the Emissions Self Diagnostics back to Jump, so it would have to do all the tests again, including the 200-mile Evap test. I'd say, do a couple tanks first. If no improvement, maybe THEN erase the codes.

Maintenance history of my car indicate the fuel cap was replaced TWICE under warranty by the dealer , for this same complaint

The Evap.... pump?? or something inside the wheel well on the filler side sometimes has a problem. There is a thread in this forum somewhere that deals with it. I can't remember what it was called, but there is a SEARCH function that may help. Of course, Google Search usually finds Jag Forum threads easier.

Shortly after I bought my car last year there was a recurring check engine code related to the evap system. Turned out to be a failed emission pump. The tech that tracked it down speculated the code was showing when the seller had it smogged and they "fixed it" by simply clearing the code. Since it takes significant driving for the OBD system to detect the problem again, it allowed them to sell the car.

Unfortunately, the pump is above the differentail so the whole rear subframe had to be dropped to replace it. Total cost was nearly $1000. The seller paid half of it under the 30 day warranty.

I hope your problem is this one!

Thanks all for the inputs. I didn't want to clear the code so that I had proof of a current problem. I contacted the dealer, they said to take it in to a shop. I plan to do that later this week. I wanted to do that so I could take advantage of the 1 month/1k mile warranty in case it is something that will cost a lot to fix. I found a local independent Jag shop, so I'll try there.

I just checked my repair records. My car was showing P2406 and P0442 so you seem to have a different problem.

Hey all,
I hope everyone is doing well. The CEL issue isn't resolved, but I wanted to provide an update. I spoke with a Jaguar tech at English Cars, in Odenton, MD. They are very knowledgeable, BTW. He said the most likely problem is the gas cap, to try and replace that first. If that doesn't resolve the problem, he said they'd need to do a smoke test to look for leaks ($165).

I ordered a new Jaguar OEM gas cap and installed it. Oddly, the new OEM gas cap (part # C2D33850) I ordered looks slightly different than the one that was on the car. I've been driving the car for about a week, the CEL hasn't gone off and the code P0456 still shows up. I tried to clear out the code using Torque Lite yesterday, but it won't work...the code won't go away.

So, I've spoken to the dealer and they will take a look at it once am able to take it back up to PA to get the door dings fixed. My 1 month warranty is about to expire, but the dealer said they'll still take care of the door dings and look at the CEL because I can't travel up there right now due to the Coronavirus situation. They have been really good to work with.

I'll let everyone know when there are any more updates.

Pat

Your local emissions inspection station should be able to test your old gas cap for leaks, probably for free. It's a common problem. I also suspect that your old cap might not have been the proper one for your car.

Inspect your old gas cap. Is it clean? Is the gasket clean and smooth? Is the filler neck clean and smooth? If you don't have a good seal between the cap and the filler neck, you'll get a CEL.

To keep your new cap like new, clean the cap and the filler neck and wipe a little Vaseline around the top of the neck and the gasket. That little bit of lube will make it easier to remove the cap and put it back on, and provide a better fit.

I had a smoke test done on my XJ-S fuel tank years ago, trying to identify source of fuel odors in the boot.total waste of time and money. Don't remember exactly, but just watching the tech do the test made it clear it couldn't detect anything short of a gush.

I actually get better gas mileage when I put Shell gas in my Infiniti hybrid. Never had any problems at all with that car.

Sounds like you need to find a good tech that knows how to smoke test it. Also need to check the sensor circuit .

for some cars like Jaguar,it does make the gas light come on.Shell does have good gas and maybe it's cleaning the gunk out your fuel system to make the gunk flow through your car and the engine light comes on to let you know the gunk is circulating into your engine.Didn't mean to make it sound like something wrong with shell gas but that's the only reason I can think of while Jaguars don't like shell gas
