Default 2013 XKR Convertible Top

Just purchased a mint 2013 XKR convertible. Came with top up, and I put it down for about 5 days in the garage.

I don't think this info I'm about to give has anything to do with the top, but ... I noticed that left side black plastic panel that pulls shut when the top is down (about 3" x 5") just behind the rear seat on the hard cover had no tension and wouldn't close when the top was fully down. I removed the interior panel and learned that the cord had opened up. I replaced the cord, attached it to the spring inside the white plastic piece, and now this piece works fine. I don't think this has anything to do with the convertible top issue I now have.

The top closes to within a foot of the windshield and stops. Also, the hard panel that shuts when the top is down can be lifted up about an inch by hand, which it shouldn't.

I'm thinking there must be something simple that the top is sensing that stops it from a full close. Anyone have experience this? Just got the car and have not yet driven it since I live in CT and it's too cold for top down driving. Thanks!

Are there any error messages on your instrument panel? The top won't operate if the luggage separator is out of position, but I doubt that's the problem since your top moves. Is your battery fully charged? If not, that's the first thing to do.

When your battery is fully charged, try closing the top. If that doesn't work, reset your top. Details are in your Owner's Handbook. Before you do anything, read both of these threads including all the links and pay particular attention to the posts made by WhiteXKR (Steve, The Jag Wrangler). He's the Convertible Top Guru, and the inventor of the Remote Control Top - it's what the factory forgot.

Thank you! There are no error messages, and the battery is on trickle charge. I have not reinstalled the back seats, but I doubt the top is detecting this.

It seems like the top is stopping at the point where the rear windows would rise upon closing. Maybe there's something going on with the rear windows and they are signaling the top not to fully close. I reinstalled the rear interior panels exactly as original, so I doubt something is stuck there affecting the rear window operation.

The rear windows don’t rise until the top has locked into the closed position.
There are a couple threads out there where the top wouldn’t close because the cable that runs along the side of the top (one on each side) from front to back, had come out of position and was binding, preventing the top from closing all the way. It can get out of position at the fold point about where the front seats are.
Check both sides to see if the cable appears to be located in the same position/track/slot/groove on both sides. There’s an adjustment screw there to keep it in the right place.

I'm one of the people kj07xk is referring to.
Remember: those little windows have to be TOLD it's OK to close. If they don't get a signal that the top has fully closed, they won't go up. I found that to be the case even if you complete the top closing manually. If you get a "HOOD NOT LATCHED" message (which means the top's not fully locked in place), those little windows won't go up-- even when you can manually raise the main windows with the buttons on the doors.

Here's a thread from when I ran into a similar scenario with my top:

Got it resolved with the help of this group. Hope you do as well.
