Default Which 4.2L Motor Oil Do You Use?

The 2009 Owner's Handbook specification for motor oil is 5W-30 that meets WSS M2C913-B. That's a European spec that's not available in the USA. WSS M2C913-C and D are backwards compatible but I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything that specifically said that it was backward compatible to meet those specs. It's been more than 10 years since those specs were issued, and I suspect that all of the synthetic motor oils sold today exceed those specs.

Do you foresee any problems if I were to use any of the major brand fully-synthetic 5W-30 motor oils, such as Castrol, Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc.? Which brand and flavor do you use and recommend?

Been using:

Castrol 03101 EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 Advanced Full Synthetic

(That’s from the Amazon site, sometimes I just pick it up at Walmart.)
Not that I drive it in the winter, but like the wider operating temperature range.

I vary it up based on sales. I use Mobil 1, Castol Magnatec, and Valvoline Maxlife; all in 5W30. I change more often than most (3-5k) due to that mileage is primarily city or hard driving, and I am not comfortable filtration wise running longer. I usually run Wix or Mobil 1 filters.

Yes, again, because I didn't find the answer to my question when I Advance Searched this Forum. There's lots of answers about 5.0L oil, but nothing that specifically addresses using fully synthetic oil in the 4.2L or any documentation that supports backwards compatibility with the original Jaguar 4.2L oil spec WSS M2C913-B.

Nevertheless, I presume that any quality, name-brand fully-synthetic oil, including this Castrol 5W-30, will be fine.

Default Castrol Edge or. Castrol Magnatech?

I Googled "Castrol Edge or Castrol Magnatech" and found this. I thought you'd find it interesting.

"Thank you for contacting Castrol North America.

Castrol EDGE does not have the same technology as GTX MAGNATEC, the two have different additive systems.

Castrol GTX MAGNATEC has intelligent molecules that cling to critical engine parts like a magnet, providing an extra layer of protection from the start and throughout warm-up that won't drain to the sump.

Castrol EDGE has a more advanced technology with fluid titanium that provides superior engine wear protection. It provides a higher level of high temperature protection, anti-wear performance, and viscosity stability.

Castrol EDGE is our premium product line.

Castrol always recommends following the guidelines of the engine manufacturer for the recommended oil (i.e. SAE grade, API service category and manufacturer specifications) specific to your application. This information can always be found in the owner's manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly

Jaguar recommends Castrol. The Castrol 03087 EDGE Extended Performance is their top-of-the-line motor oil.

I just answered my own question, as that's what I'll use with the OEM filter.

That's Walmart's brand. I never shop there because they abuse their vendors by taking unearned discounts and chargebacks. Guess how I know.

Castrol Edge Titanium. (It is the base, for Jaguars spec oils). Out of warranty, any quality synthetic will do the job.
NAPA Gold. Best I've seen to date, and a close second is Beck/Arnley. (<<< Error This is comparing the 5.0L filters)
Note: Napa Gold, Beck/Arnley, Hastings are all manufactured by Mahle.

5000 mile change minimum.

Stuart, you seem serious.
You want the best and you want it cheaper than the Dollar store brand. I got you.

Pennzoil platinum ultra $20 or less for 5 quarts.
And its the best oil on the market, not because of any special formulation, just the most premium ingredients you can get.
So good that while others have to add detergents to make oil last x number of miles or clean for x amount of time to qualify for extended oil drains of exotics; penz plat ult got JLR approval without altering their oil, for the 5.0 no less. No titanium or moly required.

Guys like me who have 600k combined and 3 cars we kept 25 years+ know there is nothing more, just more expensive and all the others are unproven, just their own marketing claims. They wont even tell you the ingredients.
All I know is that on 5k country trips, I go through 2+quarts of other oil (mobil1) 3/4quart pennz ultra.

Wise guys like you know the costco biz model of making millions from membership instead of squeezing quality, even subsidizing the merchandise to do it. Same thing here, its not a company making a living from oil changes- its from Shell, its really a way for them to utilize their byproducts. And it all starts with building a reputation.

See how it compares in the competitors own tests. It performed on par with the best across the board.

Yeah its hilarious how Amsoil finishes first in every single category in their own tests.

As they say, sometimes truth can be found by sifting through a lie. Look how well the Pennzoil did, and its the cheapest synthetic oil, even cheaper than super tech.

Sorry, Q&C, that's not me. I don't want anything "cheaper than the Dollar store brand." That's buying junk that doesn't last and actually costs more because you have to buy it again. I just want to know that if I spend my hard-earned money on something it's going to work as expected. That's why I won't make political contributions to Democrats.

That reminded me of what the alcoholic schizophrenic said: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!"
