Default ABS faulty, DSC not available, message

While driving in Sicily last week, I had to go through some lengths of rain puddles and mud, at times at some six inches. After a wonderful meal (during which time it was still raining), got back to the car and drove off. After a minute or so the console started screaming 'ABS faulty' and 'DSC not available'. I pulled over, waited a minute or so, switched off car and switched on again. Voila' the error messages disappear and all is happy ever after. Could this single fault have been caused by rain/mud affecting the wheel speed sensors? I would have thought that the sensors and toothed wheel system is sealed.

Thanks!
