has anyone installed an external/addition oil cooler on 5.0 engine?
Any ideas/suggestions?

Best regards

"Don't do it?"
Why would you need it, racing it? Added cost and complexity

Yes, from time to time. But hard 15-20km on a track and having enging overheating error (130C deg. oil temperature).

Actually it should be a fairly easy mod. The only concern is - where to place additional radiator. It's one of these healthy and reasonable modifications (IMHO). More oil in an engine. Lower oil temperatures. Etc.

OK, you need it. Surprised the oil temp hits that high that fast

right in the front of the car, forward of the radiator…. may even benefit from the effects of the fan…
I too have considered the approach. Of course I’d want a thermostat on the line as “too cold” oil is also not a preference of mine.

Begs the questions. what about power steering cooling? transmission cooling?! brake cooling?! and that radiator isn’t race quality either.

That's exactly what I think. Wondering if anyone did it before and has some battle-tested ideas (e.g. size of a radiator etc).

That was fast . I have looked at OTS solutions with a sideways glance. I haven’t found anything available as a direct replacement.
Truly, I feel one of the most overlooked maintenance issues is the power steering fluid. And brake fade is never fun!
And there are enough threads on ZF transmission failure…

@power steering - Good point with a power steering fluid. It was wet around after a trackday. Need to think about it too!
@brake fade - This is working well. Have Alcon set with floating rotors 400 + 350mm (first 5.0 which I'm aware of - as rear is not an easy plug and play vs 4.2)
@transmission - would have an idea for a decent mod in case of a failure - but here I'm rather confident that it will be okay. Actually more afraid of an engine reliability...

Coming back with initial thoughts, as XKR season in my part of the world is at the end this year... Two options on a table for additional oil cooler.
1. Remote oil filter adapter (custom made in place of a oil filter and oil filter cap) -> remote oil filter plate with a thermostat (e.g. Greddy Universal Type-I Block 12401114) -> oil cooler
2. Drilling in a lower oil sump -> thermostat opening/closing a circuit -> electric oil pump (e.g. mocal tcp1) -> oil cooler

Question / doubt - what gonna happen with an oil pressure in a setup #1 and how sensitive is 5.0s/c engine for any drop of an oil pressure. My preferred approach is #1 as it is easier to go back to stock, similar approach is quite common and no new pipes on a bottom of a car (also easier to plug oil temp/pressure sensors to this Greddy kit). But #2 is used by many extreme tuners as it does not impact oil pressure (at all?!).

Anyone has any experience and thoughts on this topic?

no experience per se but yes on #2 i can picture that: no impact on oil pressure at all. you can reliably fill the system with an exact amount of additional oil, so that you know what you pump out of the sump to the cooler cannot starve the engine, since you'll be pumping it right back into the sump. there is nowhere better to put the now-cooled oil since that's where it came from. any pressure variation in your oil cooling solution (including total failure of the pump) has no effect as it runs in parallel to the engine oil loop, not in series with it.
