Default Airbag Warning Light issue

Hi Everyone,

I am wrestling with an Airbag Warning Light issue in in my XKR in the Instrument cluster.

I have searched all the threads here before posting.

It started without any particular event. When I start the car it comes on and after 6 seconds it turns off for a split second and then comes right back on again.
There are NO flashes that would indicate an error message, just a solid light.

I have an iCarsoft i930 that returns NO codes.
I have the SDD v130 / JLR Mongoose that also returns NO codes
The horn works, and the problem does not seem to have any bearing on the steering wheel / clock spring.

Would anyone be able to offer a few pointers on how to try to trace the reason that this being displayed please?

Many thanks ahead of time!

Phil

I would agree to check the battery first. But No codes…. not even CANN bus issues?

The battery is about 3 years old... I thought maybe it might be that, but it is always on a tender... would a topped up battery still cause those issues?

No codes at all! I wondered if the SDD might show some historical data? ...as in when the light might have triggered (two days ago)

Probably not - have you tried a battery disconnect for a few minutes and reconnect?

...I have not - I guess would have to do a bunch of resetting with a disconnect, right?

Just the windows. POSSIBLY the parking brake. Oh, and your adapted driving style would return to baseline. That's not necessarily a BAD thing though.

I had a similar symptom last year. It started when I put a weight on the passenger seat. It was a golf trolley.
It seemed to reset after a full adult sat in the seat.
I never really got to the bottom of what should happen if a say a child sat in the seat. The system is supposed to automatically sense that it’s a child and turn the airbag off. I don’t know if the airbag light should be lit in that instance.
It seemed to stop happening after an adult sat in the passenger seat. I don’t carry the golf trolley on the seat any more but it hasn’t appended for a year or more

There are a few plugs under each seat that may have come unplugged when moving the seat.
I believe that the airbag system is inoperative if the lamp is lit.

Thank you for all of the kind suggestions!

Nothing has worked though, bounced around in the seat several times, checked wiring beneath the seat - that was a lot of greasy fun, and disconnected / reconnected the battery.

I am suspecting the battery... 12.57 volts at rest is fine for a NORMAL car, but we all know the idiosyncrasies of the XKR... I just don't want to dump $300 on a whim.

If there are any suggestions from anyone more experienced that myself in using the SDD to try to locate the sensor error I would be most grateful.

Otherwise, not really sure what to do at this point...?

Many thanks to all you kind souls,

Phil

I think 12.5 (around 90% charge should be fine) - one thing you could do is connect the charger - should read around 14 volts turn on ignition but don't start the engine. That should rule out the voltage issue.

Yeah…. no codes…. I’d go with the reset first, too.

Ok chaps... I FINALLY got a code returned!

After attaching the i930several times and searching it is now giving me a B0070 code... The driver's pretensioner connection fault.

So... I believe it is a yellow conductor UNDER the front seat.

Any pointers on how to get to this connector and what to look for? Do I have to disconnect the battery? ...service manual says to "Make the SRS system safe" but with little additional color!

Hopefully I will not have to remove the seat..?

Thanks gain for any help,

Phil

I would just remove the four seat bolts , open the left side door and put the seat on a 45 with the head rest out the door. That will give you enough access to both clean the pretensioner connections as well as do a full replacement of the pretensioner unit if needed. There is only one bolt holding the pretensioner in position and replacement is just a matter of feeding the SRS wire back through it's original path and reconnection. It's also possible to do an ohm check on the unit to see if it's good. Disconnecting the battery is always a good idea although I have done it a time or two live with no issues. Used replacements are readily available on fleabay for cheap.

Thank you Ken,

Great info here... unfortunately I have to go buy a Torx female socket for the front two bolts - go figure, in 47 years I have never needed one!

I will do so as soon as possible :-)

you can use a metric socket to get close enough!

So this gets better!
Someone previous thought to CUT the wires coming from the pretensioner (green and grey) going into the connector block. They then soldered a 2.2 OHM resistor across the cut wires going to the connector block. I am assuming that they wanted to "fool" the CAN into thinking that the pretensioner was there.

A) What should the impedance of the pretensioner be?
B) IF the impedance is 2.2 OHMs they why is the system retuning an error all of a sudden, and...
C) what would you suggest I do?

Grrr.... used cars!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Phil

I've no idea on the ohmage, but you should definitely reattach the cut wires without any resistor. If you need a new pretensioner, then get one. I'm sure there are dozens of used ones out there.
