Default AJ133 engine rebuild… who does it in the states?!

Who, in the US, can actually tear down these engines and rebuild them bolt by bolt replacing wear parts etc before it implodes. Do I need it now? No, but with 120k miles on my 5.0L SC every 1k miles I put on her I get more and more nervous lol…. Has anyone has a rebuild? Has anyone needed one? What is everyone’s experience?

My first XF 5.0 Supercharged did 187k miles before she started showing signs of aging. At the time I didn't have enough time or money that I wanted to keep investing in her. If I had I would have just had the issues fixed. I put over 100K of those miles on myself and despite more than a few dozen quarter mile passes, most of which with a pulley and tune I really only had to do the standard maintenance that comes with being a 5.0 owner. There are better parts available now, but just mind the cooling system and the oil level/change intervals ( I did between 7500 and 10K) supercharger maintenance, and more than likely you'll be just fine putting more miles on it than I have. Another insane thing is while I always meant to change the transmission fluid, I never did. Never a complaint from the transmission, not even once. Blows my mind. I love the ZF transmissions they are something else.

I have a 13 XF 5.0 Supercharged now. Has around 75K on it. I plan on doing extra maintenance on this one based on what I saw towards the end of driving my first one. Both valve covers had leaks, both PVC diaphragms were split, and I'm pretty sure one or more of the fuel injectors were going out. There is much ado about the timing chains, guides and tensioners on early 5.0s but mine were all original and other than some noise on warm startups remedied by 20 sec or so of 2K idle, held up even with all the abuse. I have nothing but high praise for this engine, the whole platform really. Once paid off here in a few months, I'm getting VAP stage 3, and a host of other mods as well as changing all the aforementioned parts that failed/were failing on my old one.

There is also nothing mystical about rebuilding the engine either. Any competent engine builder should be able to handle it. Best of luck with yours and try not to worry!

Exactly true.... BUT, are any parts available? Rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, and possibly even oversized pistons and rings if there is any excessive wear (for a cylinder bore).

This is an amazing thread if you've got the time:

Everything but oversized pistons are out there, you just have to be up to the task and fluent in Google-Fu. VAP sells aftermarket pistons now too.

Having said that, it's easier and probably cheaper to buy a wrecked car and engine swap.

All I do is buy Jaguar's from auction and restore, sell, keep, whatever is in the water at the moment and this is correct.

Edit: I don't mean it is all that I do ...rather it is what I do in between my cash crop of being an IT director for a large manufacturer and my farm. (According to my wife, though, she'd probably say it is all that I do lol! ) That being said, if someone had the money to rebuild it all and not a lot of experience with auctions, i'd say get it rebuilt, I think (more for me, anyhow!). It is a great opportunity to get a heck of a deal though and this opens up options for mechanics too. An engine swap requires very little maker specific knowledge.
