Default Auction cars , what's the deal

I've got a local auto body guy that goes to various car auctions to buy cars for clients and to sell at his business. Now at these auction the cars are usually somewhere from $10K-$30K type cars. Do I assume that the auctions that the Jaguar dealers go to are the high end types ? Also do I also assume that the quality of the cars at these auctions are almost as new. I've talked to a few dealers and they have purchased auctions cars and it seems they were mostly late model Jags with low mileage and one owner. Is this the general understanding.Just trying to grasp this.

A friend of mine has a car dealership. Over the weekend he told me his friend picked up a 2012 Aston Vantage V12 for like 54K in a Detroit auction.

I have access to the auto auctions, PM me. Be aware late model Jaguar XKR's are very rare at these auctions.

You will be buying these cars "under the gun". Although you can look it over out in the field, you will not get the time to do a very thorough examination of the car which you would certainly do if buying on a lot or privately for Jaguar kind of money. Is it worth it to you even if you are able to save some money? Make sure you get at least all the history you can get from the ID number before bidding. Make sure you are buying under a green light so that you can arbitrate if necessary. Good luck and do your homework. It's still a lot of money.

Understand so if a Jaguar dealer is buying and then CPO's the car how would that be a risky deal. Also if the dealer pulls service history and carfax (I know they don't get it all) shows no issues would it something to buy. Then again unless the dealers are getting lease returns or trade in's how would you know if they are selling auction cars. Then again is an independent better or worse then a dealer. Interesting!

I followed a particular car from NY auctioned to a Florida dealer on line. Some dealers have access to pre inspection reports before the car runs through the lane. The rating system was 1-5 and this particular car was rated a 2 out of 5. The report showed the driver's side fender and rear quarter were redone but acceptable, a number of deep scratches that required paint work, and curb rash on a few rims. I went to see the car at the dealership after it was dealer prepped. It look like a new car. Only if you are in the business could you see the paint work. I'm not in the business and unless I scrutinized it further would not be able to tell the body of the car was reworked. When spending close to 50 large (at that time) I wanted as close to a perfect car as I could get.

One key is to buy a high-line car in a non high-line market auction as my example of Aston. Not many bidders are looking for such expensive cars and that is why it went cheap. Go to Manheim, and there's more people competing. I believe this car had a condition statement as someone mentioned earlier and I think they guarantee the car to be in the condition of the statement.

Obviously, you need to have clear funds to buy the car which could be an issue for some. If I were to buy via an auction, I'd just pay out 1-2K on the car as commission so my friend buys it while I secure financing while it's in transit to me.

I thought Jaguar auctions out of Manheim?

I hear you and I had a guy look at this one and the carfax said it was hit. The sales guy said he couldn't tell and didn't know until he read the carfax. My guy said the car looked like new except for the curb rash on a wheel but that would be repaired. This was an auction car. I passed because of the seats as I want the cool/heat feature and not the performance seats. I had a car dealer friend with a Manhiem account and watched for months, and saw very few 2010 XKRs. I finally found one from a private seller on ebay. Sale worked out fine. I put down a deposit, inspected and drove car home.

Got my 2010 XKR from a Jag dealer who had purchased it at a California auction at the end of a one party three year lease. He got it approved for a CPO and put it on his lot. I walked in while dropping off my 2004 XJR for some expensive repairs and the rest was history...

But XKRs of any kind were rare at this dealer. He's got one on his lot now--a cherry 175 in ultimate black--lots of XF variants, a few F-types, and boatloads of Rovers of one sort or another. He sells far more Rovers than Jags, which I think is typical...

My 2010 XK with 16K miles was on a truck heading to the auction when I finalized a deal with the Jaguar dealer in Chicago. They had the car shipped back to them and then trucked to me. The car is perfect! The only thing I can think of as to why it was going to the auction is that it was winter in Chicago and the dealer probably figured they'd be stuck with it until spring.

My 2013 XKR was an auction car. Texas Imports bought it and then listed it on AutoTrader, where i noticed it on sale for $70K. Over the past 3 months I have been really pleased with the car, with only 3K miles, it's like new.....
