Backup Camera new option
#61
The only issue I've had actually just occurred today. The pairing between the camera and the receiver needed to be re-established. The first couple of times, pairing failed, but in looking at the licence plate frame, there is a reset button under the camera. Pushing that and holding it for a few seconds re-established the pairing and all is well. I think it was a good deal, although it would be nice if the display was a bit larger, or had a software equivalent that would work on a tablet.

The next generation of this car will probably not only turn on the lights, but unlock and start the engine, just because I walked by.

"One warning: please be patient when you receive your setup and plug in and charge the frame battery for a full 6-8 hours before mounting. If not, it will drop the pairing with the display screen pretty consistently and create the sense that the product is defective. I know this now ..."
I've had no problems with mine, and it's never become unpaired. I'm much more comfortable backing up now with my Type S backup cam display in my ashtray and the OEM park assist variable beeping and touchscreen warning display. Together they're perfect for me, especially considering the ease of installation and low cost.

Charging the frame for 4 hours wasn't long enough. If you had read LoudHogRider's post #33, above, and charged the license plate frame for 8 hours, you wouldn't have had an intermittent connection problem. He stated:

Bernie,
I'm pretty sure that Costco in the US is the exclusive retailer of the Type S wireless solar backup cam at this time. If you're a Costco member in Canada, check with Customer Service in your local store and see if they can get it for you. Or you might be able to order it online from the Costco US website:

Costco is an adventure. As Forrest Gump said " ... it's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Where else can you get a big, delicious all-beef hot dog with (almost) all the trimmings and a soda with free refills for $1.50? Just don't rat me out to my cardiologist!

I'm in double trouble because my Costco is right next door to my Home Depot, the toy store for big kids.

Yep, I agree that the Polish dog was much more flavorful. But I still like the beef hot dog the traditional NY/NJ way when it's buried under deli mustard, relish, and kraut. But here in the South, the chili cheese dog rules. Regardless of your taste, it's still a great deal for a quick lunch.
If we make enough noise, maybe Costco hear us and will bring back the Polish dog. Sign this petition:

Life is too short to always eat healthy. We're all headed towards the end of the road, so why not enjoy an occasional guilty pleasure along the way? Just keep in mind that it just might be what kills you.

Great discussion! Thanks for the info everyone. My wife has casually mentioned a few times how nice it would have been if our 2011 XK had come with a back-up camera. This seems the perfect solution for her. I'm more of a turn-your-head-around-and-look kind of guy (even the proximity warning buzzer annoys me) but hopefully she will like it. Our local Costco in San Antonio had 50 of the units yesterday after I bought one for $125.

This is to update my experience with the Type S Wireless Solar Powered Backup Cam. Overall, I'm very pleased.
Yesterday, my display flaashed the low battery warning icon, so I plugged my phone charger into the frame around 9PM. I unplugged it this morning around 9AM and opened the car door and there was a clear image on the display. When I went to leave later this morning, I was puzzled that the display was blank, with no image. My first reaction was that it somehow got unpaired. I was wrong. So what happened?
The license plate frame is very close to the unlock button on the trunk lid, and it is very easy to inadvertently push the power button located directly under the camera. I didn't realize that when I opened the trunk lid to unplug my battery maintainer I must have turned the backup cam off.
Simple fix, no pairing necessary. Just push the power button and make sure that the blue light blinks twice and done. The display works again.

Stuart,
This means that one could simply but manually shut OFF the license plate camera, thereby preserving battery power if one doesn't drive the car for a week or two?
Any idea how long one can go without a recharge of the camera (i.e., if the car is garaged)?
Thanks for updates. ...provides more justification for hinting this for xmas. ,
