Default Battery access question

The other post talks about battery acid but after I 1st got my 2012 I had to reinstall the screws for the battery cover. While doin so I was wondering how do you remove the carpet cover. Looking in the OM it tells you to remove the slide cover that protects the top. My question is how do you do this. If the cover assembly can be removed then I can see it would be easy to remove the battery cover. How does it come out.

For wing-nut tie down looking things secure the battery cover section of the trunk.

Yep got that but with them removed there was no way to slide the carpet panel under the slide unit that contains the top when down. Is that removable and if so how

The carpet piece is removable, try taking out the spare tire floor cover piece first. Never had an issue getting to the battery.

Jagtoes:

Be sure to re-install the slide out partition carefully as it has to be in place properly within the rails or the top will not open. There is a switch that gets activated telling the top that it is OK to open without getting caught up in the sliding panel.

Once removed, use a flashlight to find the 4 plastic wing nuts in each corner top and bottom and just pull out the panel. Then your Navigation unit, and battery will be exposed.

Do it once and it is easy from then on.

Rich I had seen the wing nuts and had to replace them as the dealer must have had the panel off to put a charger on the battery. What I didn't figure out yet was how to remove the slide out partition. It appears locked in on each side without a method to unlatch it or remove it. I assume if I look at it i'll see how to remove it but was just wondering knowing others have done it what the procedure was.

Retract it, then just lift one corner straight up, then the other corner. It basically sits in a cup at each end. When you re install it there should be a slight snap into position, and the shade need to be pulled out and aligned in the guide on each side.

Sorry, realized you have a convertible. Have no idea how to get the panel on that one...

Once you open the trunk there is a handle to lift up slightly on the partition. Then it retracts like White XKR stated. Slide it back like a window shade, and carefully pull one side out and it should slip out of the track.

I am sure you figured out already.

Hey Guys,
I'm reading this thread with interest, as I may have to replace my battery. So, seeing the Top being lowered requires that slider to be fully extended and locked in an up-right position, then, why is that top protector/slider even retractable in the first place?
Is it for allowance of extra room for luggage with the top up only?

The thumb/wing nuts are only plastic threads and they can have a tendency to stripe down and loose the holding ability. It is a standard thread so I am sure you could find an easy replacement. The replacements may not have the hook for securing the cargo net, but who cares. There isn't much room in the trunk space on the Vert model anyway.

I would suggest however finding a replacement. Try this link:

ClipsAndFasteners.com - Automotive Retainers,Clips and Fasteners

They may very well be under the Ford branding.

Hope this helps. I always try to provide a link when possible so it makes it easy for other forum members when searching/researching.

Thanks for the link Rich...

Kinda reminds me of the rear seats of my 2+2 E-Type
Glad, my children are grown and gone....!

Consider your car as a 2 seater.

Yes, I already have. I'd just soon have a harden tonneau to cover from the back of the front seats to the hard shell to cover. In fact, Mina has one for the earlier XK verts.....it's similar to this
