any one ever used or heard about Kleen Wheels - it's like a hub cap inside the rim to stop break dust.

 

No but I switched to ceramic (lol) and it made a huge difference for not really that much money.

 

Try ceramic pads, very low dust = happy driver.

 

It's hard to break dust, it's too...... dusty.

 

How do you break dust anyway. Can you do it by hand or do you need a machine.

I would not consider putting a "shield" on there, would it not restrict airflow over the rotors?

 

Jaguar actually used to sell something similar themselves. A 16" metal shield, part number MNA1803AA. I had a set on my X300 XJ12.

 

I had used them on an old Volvo. I found that the inside of the disk would not let the dust out and it would cake up. When you removed the disk it would be coated and started to corrode . I ended up throwing them out after I found a set of ceramic pads for the car. I don't know about the earlier cars but my 12 does not seem to dust a lot . Then again I wipe them down after every run.

 

Ceramic pads like Akebono are very low dusting.

That's pretty funny, "my 12 does not seem to dust a lot. Then again, I wipe them down after every run." How do you know they don't "dust a lot?" When I bought my 2010 XKR, my last minute decision to have the wheels painted black was my 5 year experience with my 2002 XKR, which like you, I had to wipe down every day to prevent the silver double fives from looking charcoal. I figured the black wheels on the 2010 would just look matte colored after a day of driving, so I could skip to every other day of wiping down. I'm just getting lazy.

And by the way, mid-80's tomorrow when we're at the golf course, we could still use a fourth.

 

I'm another big fan of Ceramic Pads. They are very low dusting and still stop quite well. Not TOTALLY dust-free, but any bit helps with these cars. Brake dust completely ruined the front wheels on my F250, and I swapped to the ceramic pads way too late. Now I can safely get new wheels without the fear of destroying those.

 

After I got the car I took off the wheels and cleaned them and waxed them. After my local drives I would just blow them off ( I know brake dust ) but it was easy. Also after a few 4-5 hour trips they never seemed to get to dusty. Lets say it's not like my kids A4 where the wheels get pretty black in a few days.
Love to join you but I won't be able to get there. Anyway it looks like 52* on monday and we have a 10AM tee time so another top down day heading for the golf course. We only have 2 courses open around here and one is now on temporary greens . 40* is my cut off. Enjoy.

 

Go for Ceramics, either Akebono or Centric Posi Quiet.

 

Together with ceramic pads, you might try Armor All's "Wheel Protectant" or another product called "RejeX". Wheels need to be meticulously clean before using either of these products. My girlfriend swears by these products as used on her RV. Stuff "glides" off.

 

I too have Akebono's all round on my 07 XK. Break dust is almost zero. However I don't think the braking is as good as the softer OEMs. Certainly the initial bite isn't but other than that no issues.

 

True. The initial bite on VDP with Akebono's wasn't as good, but after that they dug in about the same. Worth it for the brake dust though. Maybe there are non-ceramic pads that aren't as bad (in terms of dust)? My Lotus has hardly any dust and brakes are enormous.

 

Hardly noticeable and the trade off for that horrendous dust would be worth it regardless.

 

How much is too much, and is it an indicator of anything? I get the brake dust film after pretty much any length of ride. Had the entire car ceramic'd (instead of waxed) so easy to clean off, but jeez, maybe a pair of ceramic brake pads as well is the way to go?

 

All brake pads are sacrificial and give their lives to save yours. Friction causes brakes to stop your car and every time you step on the brake pedal a little bit of pad rubs off as brake dust. Softer pad compounds produce more dust than harder compounds. Bottom line is that all brake pads produce brake dust, but light color dust is less apparent than black dust on a silver wheel. Ceramic pads usually are light color, so the dust just isn't as obvious.

Jaguar engineers could have specified ceramic pads, but didn't. Why not? Brake dust is a small price to pay for the best performance. I ceramic coated my wheels and the dust wipes off easily and quickly with a damp rag. Nevertheless, I would try ceramic pads if I could find them for my Alcon brakes.
