Now this is viscosity.

One of the more difficult concepts regarding viscosity that I have when dealing with folks at work is they don't understand how the number are derived and even salesmen struggle when you ask what the viscosity is at 70 or 80`f where we run our cooling loops versus 100`f thick number on the standard. If the gearbox temps get up to 212`f we have more than just an oil problem and pretty much all of the gear oils are running the same thin numbers at that temp. Through empirical experiments using the viscosity checker for our gravure ink (think gasoline) I've found that the dyno oil we now run is much thicker versus the synthetic we used to.

I've found on several occasions that running the oil temps too low causes oil pump and motor failures or the motor will run over current and trip offline when the machine isn't generating heat. Of course management makes a huge deal about why we are getting defective pumps and motors and just give me the blank stare when I tell them it's a thermostatic valve problem. Turn off the cooling water and the problems go away. Then they whine that the presses are too warm, 100`f more or less.
