Supposed to be on when I open the door? My key is inside the house, I am I the garage, I opened the door so I could clean the inside a bit, and the entertainment system is on as well as Bluetooth (my phone connected) as a note, the ctek is plugged in.
This seems .. odd? I read the manual the other day, but must have missed this bit. I don't think I have another car that does this.in quite the same way....
It is normal and is called convenience mode and it will sit like that for up to half an hour before all the systems have shut down again if you don't actually start the engine.
I keep my '10 XKR locked even when it is in the garage as locking the car makes the systems shut down a lot sooner. That seems to be enough for me to never have to use my Ctek in day to day use.
Huh. Mine screams bloody murder and flashes every available light if I open any door without a key nearby.
I think maybe you have a lost key somewhere in/near your car? Or maybe something took a poop. Maybe you should give your car to me because it is evidently broken.
I thought convenience mode was only left on after the car had been running or the key was near by. The car hadn't been moved all day. Huh. Okay then. Makes sense I suppose. I will have to start making sure I lock the door as well then

The second "lost" keyfob being in the car would be the bonus find of the century. But it doesn't tell because I usually leave the car unlocked in the garage (and most other places because I forget to lock the car)
Although your gracious offer of taking it off my hands, is tempting, I might hold on a wee bit longer... But you have first dibs if I get fed up!
I don't even have to lock mine and it gets pissed when I open a door with no key.
Actually, let me verify that, I'll need a minute or so....
Yep, all hell broke loose. Hooked to the CTEK, unlocked and not been touched for over an hour.

Huh... Maybe we have different alarm settings currently. How strange!! I always appreciate the extra investigations by members of the forum

You have a strange car then. It is quite normal to want to open the door on an unlocked cars without the key being present so why would all hell break loose?
If my door is locked and I try and open it without the key being near by nothing happens, not even a beep.
If my door is already unlocked and I open it without the key being nearby it just goes in to convenience mode.
If I have locked the car from the inside using the fob then try and open the door using the inside handle all hell breaks loose but that is the only time it does and that is because the alarm is set.
OR, I have passive alarming activated. I don't know if that's a thing on these, but I've had other cars that do the same thing. Maybe I'll check someday.

Lock your car, have someone else take the keyfob for a little trip.
See what happens when you try to open it.

I did wonder that so checked my car on my way to work this morning and there is indeed a passive alarm option.
Not sure what circumstances you would want that in although I guess it would add a little more protection on a vert if you leave it with the hood down.

Mine behaves that same way. The perimeter alarm will set itself but the doors will NOT lock if the key is moved far enough away. It's caught me more than once in the garage when I wasn't thinking and opened a car door, then I had to stomp into the house cursing to get the key fob to shut it down. I explained this behavior to the detailer the other day when I dropped the car off and he looked at me like I'd grown an extra head. As far as I am aware that's the way it's supposed to work. I believe if you watch the Doug Demuro video about the XJ220 he mentions that it works that way as well, as part of his "quirks and features".
You gave the impression that you didn't like the feature and didn't know that you could disable it because you said you had spoken to the dealer about it. If you know you have the option to turn it off but occasionally have to "stomp into the house cursing to get the key fob to shut it down" why would you leave it on?
I can't really think of a good reason to have it enabled but I assume there is one otherwise it wouldn't be an option. I just lock my car when I leave it.

I see what you are saying. I think maybe I wasn't clear. I dropped it off to the DETAILER, not the dealer. And if I had a brain I would have simply turned off that option but honestly I forgot that it was even a possibility until you reminded me of it. All I was saying by stating that mine works that was is that I was verifying that you were correct. I should be more careful the way I express myself.
My stomping back into the house is a reaction to my own stupidity, not the way the car operates. I don't frequently lock the doors while the car is in the garage but doing so, or alternately switching off that option, would both "solve" the issue. For some reason something about the fact that the car only wants me (or a key holder) to open the door somehow gives me a certain level of satisfaction which I cannot explain, but that's why I leave it the way it is. (Plus I forgot you could change it).
Please please don't think I was in some way challenging your answer. I was reflecting solely on my own personal stupidity.
My Cadillac has a self locking feature whereby if you get out of the passenger side with the key in pocket the doors are timed so that if you walk around the front of the car with the intention of opening the passenger door they will lock about 3/10ths of a second before your hand touches the door handle. *That* is a frustrating one but I leave that option on because I like the self locking doors.
