I could delay the battery issue no longer, and I realized the Bosch battery I'd put in was still under warranty (through both Bosch and Pep Boys). Over to Brooklyn I go.
Ends up Pep Boys no longer carries Bosch and have replaced with Champion. Never knew Champion made batteries. The manager said "tons" of the Bosch batteries were coming back so they switched vendors. Who knows? I wasn't really in a position to discuss it.
Does anyone have any experience with these? It was the only free swap available, so I took it.
(Two-hour wait to have it installed, so... sure. In a Pep Boys parking lot in South Brooklyn on a 95-degree day without my regular tools. Why not do it myself?)
Doesn't Johnson Controls make about 95% of ALL batteries in the United States? They just mark them differently for different customers. I don't know if that holds true for Champion or Bosch batteries though, maybe they are part of the 5%.
Note that a brand-new battery has been sitting on the retailer's shelf for ... well, that's anyone's guess ... and probably isn't fully charged. If you have a battery charger or maintainer, use it to fully charge your new battery.
If it's your daily driver and travel at least 20 miles per day, the alternator should keep your battery fully charged. Otherwise, consider buying a CTEK or other quality battery maintainer and use it whenever parked in your garage.

Well not really they have a date code on them to let you know if it's been sitting or is fresh

It's true! I voiced the exact "how long has this been sitting" concern, and they showed me that the date code (which was just month and year) was july 2020, so I'm feeling good about that ...
So far, so good. I'm tempted.... just tempted.... to try to lower and raise my top (still have that unresolved thread). But I'll be heading west in a few weeks, so probably not.
One other interesting detail: no one ever even checked my battery to confirm it was a clunker. I told them the issue, they looked at the receipt, brought out a replacement battery. That was it.

That's because they've already had to replace so many defective batteries just like yours and knew it would be a waste of time and effort to load test it. You admitted that in your Post #1!
The bad new is ... that's the first sign. You're doomed!!
The good news is ... you won't remember what you forgot!
Ask me how I know.
