Default Check engine light.

The check engine light came on yesterday and I had Auto Zone check the code. Number five cylinder misfire. The car has 57,000 on the odometer. Two questions,,,is that the coil pack? And if so, is that something that has to go to the dealer or can anybody replace it?

Seems a little early but I suspect it to be a coil pack that is on its way out. You should be able to replace it and I would also replace the spark plug too. This may help

By the way I would suspect that you may start to have others failing so be prepared. I also don't agree with using oil on the plug threads. I use never seize instead especially on aluminum heads. .

Agreed it is likely the coil pack, but if you have water or oil contamination in the plug wells that could cause misfires as well.

Water contamination is usually a result of washing the engine. Oil contamination could be a leaking cam cover seal.

(And yes, pure oil is non-conductive but leaking engine oil can still cause misfires because oil in the engine is not pure and contains contaminants.)

New coil pack installed for $140 at Firestone. That's $5 less than the dealership wanted for just the part. Go figure
