Have you been on the inside of both cars? Have you driven both cars? While there are a lot of sporty looking cars that look great on the outside, there are almost none that look and feel as luxurious as the XK does on the inside.

Of course, interior luxury and comfort might not be a priority for you.

Nevertheless, in most cases, you aren't comparing apples with apples.

I realize the two are not in the same class. One if a luxury GT car, one is a purpose-built sports/muscle car. I have driven a C6 Corvette, but never an XK.

I'm not interested in any of the XK's true competitors--the BMW 6 series or the Mercedes SL.

But the Corvette is much less expensive overall (in price and probably has a slight edge on maintenance costs) than the XK, and I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense for me.

Honestly, if I were just going to get a Corvette, I might as well keep the Mustang I have, even though it's just a V6. The XK is much more exclusive than a Corvette. Around here, a Corvette won't even turn any heads!

I really need to get into an XK or XKR and test drive one. However, they aren't even remotely in my price range yet. I really want to try to find a 2007+ XKR with 40k-ish miles in the $35k range.

So that's my biggest obstacle. I wonder if in the fall or winter this is a possibility. I know it seemed that last fall/winter, my local Jag dealership was innundated with so many XK trade-ins that it was pretty much all they had!

When you drive a Jag you will never be happy driving a Vet

Cherry Hill Classic Cars I am sure you could negotiate the price a little

2008 Jaguar XK

Insurance on the Jag will be less than the Vette, I think. 2+2 vs 2 door sports car. Mine's only about 450 every 6 months on the Jag. That'd allow you to dump a little more money into the capitol costs of ownership!

Thanks. I think I'm limited to only 2007 models due to my price constraints. I will only pay $30k for an XK and $35k for an XKR in the middle of winter. Tell me if I'm crazy!

Agreed with Rathtok... every person / location is going to be different for insurance, but 200 / month sounds pretty high to me. Don't know how much you've shopped around yet, but I went all over the internet filling out quote request forms and found one (Geico, in my case but it may be some other company for you) that just happened to be way, way cheaper than the rest.

I just switched from GEICO to Amica when I got my Mustang (I had had GEICO for 7 or so years, ever since I started driving!). Yes, it's a little bit more expensive, but I want to be covered. I'm not going to pay good money for cut rate insurance just to get ripped off when something happens! Gives me peace of mind, for sure.

I guess $200/month I quoted is really 10 payments of $200/month for a 1 year policy. So it comes out to more like $167 a month.

But you have 3 cars on that policy, right? The multi-car discount is substantial!

My insurance went up about $200 a year moving from a VDP to XK; I thought it would be more.

I'm curious as to what constitutes "cut rate"? It sure seemed like every quote request I filled out offered the exact same coverage options. The story you linked to is a sad one, but I've always thought it was standard practice as far as if you put a bunch of money into wheels, suspension, etc. that it doesn't necessarily increase the value of the car as a whole.

Depends on the insurance company.

The same coverage options on paper, sure. But are they going to lowball you on your appraisals during the claims process? Are they going to defend you adequately in court if you have an at fault accident that results in injury or death? Etc., etc.

I don't want to get off on too much of a tangent, but you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to insurance. I've never had to use my insurance in 8 years or so of driving. But when I do, I'm not going to leave it to Esurance or Progressive or even GEICO, especially now that my fleet includes cars that are actually worth something. My girlfriend got in a serious accident about a year ago (she wasn't injured but the car was destroyed) and dealing with MetLife was hopeless.

I chose Amica based on JD Power ratings and by reading testimonials online, and at least form the people I've spoken with on the phone, the customer service is about as good as it gets! And by the way, my insurance premium only went up about $10-15/month when I made the switch, so it's not like I'm going to see a huge difference in price if I went back to GEICO or a budget insurance company. But as I said, I do have that peace of mind, and $10-15/month is worth it for me.

Keep in mind I am a young 25 year old driver living in an urban DC suburb--I imagine if I were 50 years old and living in Kansas, Amica would be quoting me much less than $2000 a year!

As long as you're happy with the service, it's all good. I've had State Farm for nearly 20 years and the've always been good to me. I've had a few claims and they were quick to respond. On top of that, their rates on motorcycles are some of the best in the business and for me, that makes a huge difference. Farmers quoted me $4,600/year for insurance on a Triumph 675. State Farm charged $34 for the same bike and under $50 a month for Ducati 1098.

Thanks. Well anyhow, the point is I know what my insurance costs will be, approximately.

But how much should I factor in for maintenance/repair costs? That's the big unknown for me, I think. That, and the price of what I want.

Thanks for all your help, guys! I know you guys are doing your best to set me on the right path!

Same as you did for your XJ

Well, I think for my X350, I budgeted about $200/month, but that was back when I was driving something like 1500 miles a month. And there was a problem with the power steering rack that went unresolved (shimmying in the steering wheel). If I had kept the car, I probably would've had to have that repaired for big bucks. And the air suspension seemed like it was ready for an expensive problem, too, but that's just a hunch!

Are there any areas of XK reliability that are particularly troublesome? Do they have the throttle body issues like the X350? Any suspension issues?

I am pretty handy and can do most minor to moderate work myself, but parts on my 2006 XJ were exceedingly expensive, even with my free labor!

I haven't had my car long enough for any real advice, but since the engine is the same, maybe throttle body issue is present in XK?

They drive like different cars and the Sport setting really transforms the XK where on XJ it just makes the throttle a little snappier.

I did a horrible thing today. I sat in a 2009 XKR at the dealership, started the engine and revved it. To put it mildly, that engine sound is GLORIOUS. The best sound I've ever heard with my ears. Ever!!!!!!!

I MUST have one. It is not longer a matter of if, but when! I will do everything in my power to get one of these cars!

Yeah -- that happened to me too. Now, with the top down and while in a tunnel, drop a gear and floor it. Shenanigans, I say. Shenanigans. 'Tiz a wonderful and glorious sound that makes you go out to the garage and start it even if you have nowhere to go.
