Welcome to the Forum, Mac. Your Public Profile shows that you have a 2007 XKR Convertible,. It would be helpful if you created a signature that included details about your car (colors, miles, etc.).

You can look online at OEM Jaguar parts sellers and see if there's a parts diagram that references that PN. By my tagging Steve @WhiteXKR , a.k.a. The Jag Wrangler and the Forum's convertible top guru and inventor of the remote control top and rear window controller, he may be able to answer your question. If that spring is no longer available, a local auto upholstery/top installation shop should be able to help.

It's what the factory forgot.

Both sides are ‘stretched’?
Wondering what the problem looks like. Do you have a photo with the top up, showing the ‘flaps’ you are referring to?

I don't see any springs in the JPART catalogue or in the pic for the top from here:

What does the other side look like?

It's interesting that the JPART Catalog doesn't show that spring.

@Georgia Mac Do you know if a previous owner replaced the original top? If you don't, you can tell from the lower left corner (driver's side) of the rear glass. If it's not etched with the Jaguar name, it's an aftermarket top that's probably not identical in construction to the OEM top. Here's mine:

My top is original, and that spring is there, but doesn’t appear stretched at all during the opening/closing sequence:

I’d check local hardware stores and online sources for a similar sized spring, if that is the source of the problem.
But the tension that appears on the users spring, compared to the lack of tension on mine, makes me think the problem is something else, e.g. why is there so much tension on that spring?

Again, a picture of the so called ‘flaps’ would be useful.

The spring in your picture is the correct spring, we had a large painting in the back seat with the roof open and then closed the roof on it and it stopped part way up. The springs on both sides were stretched out of shape and will not return to original shape. Don't know the part number or the original size. If you could measure your spring with no tension and take a closer picture I may find a replacement at a hardware shop. I found an online post in the Jaguar forum from 2014 by NGARARA with a diagram of the headliner and spring but no part number Just the Page Number E67556 have not been able to contact NGARARA. Thanks for your help

The black cloth strap the spring is attached to ripped on my top. I still haven't fixed it because I'm going to need a new top soon. The strap and spring keep the back of the top snug to the body and I would think under certain circumstances water could get under the top. I also think the spring could be easily found at a good hardware store.

Sadly, he passed away several years ago. He was a knowledgeable and frequent contributor to this Forum.

Ok, must have really stretched out that spring to get it to not return.
You can zoom in on my original picture for a closer look at what it should be. You can look at the end loops of your spring to get the diameter.
The shot below is a frame from a video as I stuck my hand in there with a ruler as the top was opening. Maybe not exact, as my hand probably didn’t get all the way in there before I had to pull it out. Looks like about 3/4 inch coiled part. To be sure, take yours out and compress it to measure it.

My post had attached itself to the end of a "Follow-on" post that the original post that I was trying to reply to had acquired! I do wish they would stop doing that!

New springs comes with new headliner based on my experience with my 13MY. MT Engineering may be able to help https://www.mtmfg.com/
These are located in the headliner section. I have my old headliner give me a day or 2 and I will pull it out and provide you some more details. Your picture doesn't look quite right to me. Try looking at the opposite side for comparison.
CAU127

Universal Domestic, Side Tension Hold Down Cables, Pair (with springs)
American made in the USA (beware of inferior made imports)

Hide...
A pair of cables, one on each side, thread through pocketed hems on the tops sides. The ends of the cables hold the top to the frame. New cables are recommended with each new top. In some cars there is a rear hold down cable that binds the back of the top to the body. You can read about cable installation for two part tops in the installation summary link.
$31.00

Part #: CAU1

Default Headliner rear strap and spring assembly

Couple pictures to help you locate a spring. Included a picture of the part#.
I included the whole assembly pic for reference dimensions.
Good luck.
