Default Door Mirrors Folding

Hi, its not very often I need to fold the door mirrors in, but now my new garage is slightly narrower I could do with getting them to fold. They used to work but were always slow but now when I press the button they twitch and make a bit of noise but that about it. I was amazed at the prices of these mirrors second hand so I need to get these repaired. Is it just a case of stripping them out and lubricating everything or do the motors fail? Does anyone know whether the XF mirrors are the same or use similar internals. Many Thanks

Mine were doing that - turned out was a battery that wasn’t fully charged. In the end I bought one of these and fixed it over the rear parcel shelf with black elastic bungee cord, and into a couple of connectors on the battery. seems to work well as don't want to plug the ctek charger in all the time.

If it is a battery issue then operating the mirrors with the engine running would confirm that one way or the other.

@Spitjag did you fold the mirrors often in the past? I believe they dislike being unused for long periods.

Hi,
My car mirrors always fold away when I lock the car, and unfold when it is unlocked. Just had look in the car and there is no button that I can see, to do this independantly.

To fold both mirrors manually press the two buttons simultaneously that are next to the toggle that adjusts the mirror.

The OP's question was about Powerfold mirrors sticking but has drifted into a discussion on how they operate. Worth noting that not all vehicles have Powerfold fitted and there's also memory and heating options:

It is advisable to use the Powerfold function occasionally (especially in wet climates) to prevent the mechanism from seizing. It's sometimes possible when they stick but the motor can be heard to operate to 'help' the mirror housing manually to free it up and then clean where the housing meets the bracket arm.

Another reason for them not moving is being knocked off the drive peg by some external impact

Both reverse dip and auto fold can be set ON or OFF from the Vehicle Settings menu.

If the mirror will not move due to a failed motor, these are available separately, greatly reducing the cost of a repair.

C2P11142 is available from JLR in the UK at 77UKP and the later C2C37100 at 102 UKP. Remarkably both are showing as available today.
