Default Emergency key will not open trunk…

Greetings, good citizens of Jag Forum. So, I go down to go out on a proverbial joy ride, press the key fob, and nothing. I used the emergency key to get inside and nothing, no lights or warnings, everything is absolutely dead. In the two years that I had this car, it has been solid mechanically. Always starts, trying to stay ahead of the maintenance curve I installed a new battery 9 months ago. I checked the battery fob with a tester and got 3.1 volts.

I go to open the trunk and I can barely get the key to go halfway to one o’clock clockwise. Straight up at 12 o’clock going counterclockwise, no movement. My understanding is I should turn the key clockwise while pressing the truck release button. Please let me know if there is more to that or any tricks or hints that you may have.

Thank you.

Try spraying some WD 40 in there and on the key itself.

Specifically WD40 or would synthetic lubricate work (that is what I have on hand)?

Thank you for your advice.

I would use the synthetic lube. WD40 can gum up the lock when it dries out.

Ya, the synthetic is good. Ideally graphite powder.

Hook up a battery charger to the jump positive post located under the driver's side rear fender and the negative to any chassis point nearby. After a few seconds or so, there should be enough power to pop the trunk open with your key fob or the dash button.

So, no luck with synthetic lube. Maybe in the morning?

What am I looking for to put a charger on the car? Door #1 or #2.

Thank you to all for your help.

I don't think you need to press the button while turning the key as the button is an electronic switch. Try pushing down on the trunk gently while turning the key to take some of the load off the lock mechanism.

Under the rubber cover (#2) is the positive post.

Default Emergency key will not open trunk… Resolved

Success! I slid the cover off of the positive post then hooked up my jumper cables, waited 5 minutes and the car started right up. I did get the "cruise control is not working" message but I have fixed that in the past. I just need to find the post. She is now close an outlet, connected to her Ctek charger and hopefully, we will be good to go.

As always many thanks for the help and insight.

Keep working the lube on the key though. And give the key a try with the boot open to see if it moves.

Does that key fit the doors? Maybe it's not cut right.

Sean W: I'll give that a try.

Cee Jay: Opens and closes the driver's door just fine. Used the synthetic lube on that lock and works quite easily now.
