Default Engine Fan Loud and fast

Yesterday when I was arriving home I heard a very loud whirring noise and thought something was on in the garage. It turns out it was my car! The engine fan, which I have never even noticed before was Whirring away like a mad man even after shut down. Very fast, and the faster it went, the louder it got. The A/C runs cold so I don't believe its a problem there. The coolant overflow was full, and checking temp with tool showed 220-224 degrees. A cursory check online showed normal running temp to be 195ish? No check engine light on. Do I have multiple fans and one is not coming on? Why is my light not coming on if a relay or fan is out for some reason? I would like to check this out before light comes on as I have read that at that particular time, its too late.

Adding, no smoke, no leaks, no knocking. This happened last night. On the drive in to work today, no problems, no loud fan.

Fans will often run a while after shutdown. However, if it is abnormally loud, the fan may be failing.

It is abnormal. I have had the car almost a year, we had 110 degree weather last month, and did not get this kind of fan noise even then. Would the check engine light not come on at this point?

Normal operating range for my XK is around 196-200, even in the summer in North Carolina. Your reading of 220-224 seems quite high. I would proceed very carefully until you determine what the issue is. Perhaps Ranchero or one of the other forum members will chime in with more helpful advice.

On my 4.2L the thermostat failed along with part of the plastic housing around 40K. I learned from a fan that ran for several minutes after the car shut off.

+1 on the thermostat. It may be stuck partially closed due to deformation of the plastic housing. This has been known to happen with the 4.2 N/A engines.

Thanks All, it seems to be intermittent so will try the thermostat first, then go from there.

I found a link to purchase the OEM parts somewhere here, thanks for that. It is a location in Columbia SC, so I thought I could try ordering from my local Jag dealership but they don't have the gasket or the housing, which I thought odd. Plus the price was nearly twice what is listed on the OEM discount parts site. Thanks for the help. We will replace the thermostat and go from there.

Yea our local dealer is about 2x the price for parts than online Jag dealers i've found in NJ, Nevada and SC. You still get 1yr warranty on the parts and they are genuine Jag parts. Once you have the JLR part number, Google will help find the cheaper dealer. If you have a week or so, save the dough. Hey, I made a rhyme.

If It''s a 4.2 engine......................I had this problem several yrs ago with a '07 4.2 engine. Not only the thermostat but the whole thermostat housing had to be replaced due to structural failure of the housing. So I agree with several others that posted here. I did write a post on it several yrs ago on this forum. Got the parts out of Las Vegas online.

Yes, it is the 4.2 and it was your post that I read and I did go ahead and order the housing and gasket. Thanks for that.

Hailer, thanks much for that detailed post. That will help greatly as we do this, hopefully there are no issues before the parts get here, as it seems to be intermittent.

I would not drive it much if possible. When the fan is running on high your on the edge of something bad happening. No cushion before over temp.

+1 Especially as it is in the high 90s here in sweaty Texas currently.

I am having some parts trouble. This is a must do immediately job so need the parts now.. I had ordered the parts from discountcarparts.com but one of the parts is back ordered and nothing ships til they get the part. Its the housing. So, I ordered a housing/thermostat together from Rock Auto and it ill be here Tuesday, Now, I need the 2 seals/gaskets. The problem is I cant find both parts on one site that can get them to me by Tuesday. I need the thermostat seal Part AJ83525 and the outer assembly gasket Part C2C11477. The problem I am having s all the sites call them different names. The thermostat seal is pretty easy, but the outer assembly gasket is giving me troubles.

Can someone direct me to a place where I can get both items (if I need both, I know I need the thermostat seal). And get them quick.
