Default Engine whining (More than supercharger) anyone had this?

Hey guys,

My engine started whining the other day (Not the good kind from the supercharger), I'm guessing it's something with a pulley but has anyone had this happen or have any guesses what it might be? I need to drive it for the next few days a couple hundred miles so I don't want to get stuck.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Sound like an air leak. Either getting sucked in the induction side, or blowing from after the Supercharger side.

Have a feel around with the engine covers off. For air leakage, blowing or sucking.

Check Hoses, split, or clamp moved, lose etc.??

Dose it increase with revs?

That makes sense. It does increase with rpms. I'll have to check your recommendations when I can get the covers off.

I've had quite a few cracked hoses so wouldn't be surprised if its another one.

Thanks!

Is the timing belt to be changed anytime soon? 100K miles? When the covers are off you are allowed to spray W40 under the timing cover. If no change then tensioner pulley.

Jaguars don’t have timing belts, but they do have timing chains, which are far more long-lived.

It ended up being the alternator pulley. My car died in the mechanics parking lot so I guess I lucked out in that way.

The alternator from the dealer is over $1,200. Any recommendations on where else I can something of quality?

I went through the same thing. I purchased a rebuilt alternator from the dealer.

MY bad. It was a senior moment. I bought the XK to avoid the timing chain problems of the X8. A squeeky belt can receive a little trans oil and not suffer the oil/rubber consequences.

Replacing myself I chose a rebuilt from NAPA @ $150.00. If it fails, lesson learned and I'll get oem but not paying for labor I was willing to take the chance.
It was the front bearing on mine. I probably should have kept the 'core' and purchased a rebuilding kit, but I didn't.

I had mine (alternator) replaced last month, and kept the "dud". I plan on rebuilding the unit for a spare, considering the co$t of a new OEM. Many YouTube videos on rebuilding. Please keep us updated on how the aftermarket unit works out.

My mechanic found a remanufactured one for $850 so I saved a bit there. Out the door cost me $1,365 installed.

That's almost 10% of what the car is worth but to sell the car and get anything comparable in looks or performance would be a significant diminishing return.
