Default Folding mirrors: get scratches from folding movement

Hi all

My folding mirrors get scratche marks in the area of the folding movement.
Nothing terrible, but since I noted it I use the folding mechanism only when I really need it.

See the pictures...

The 2 pix show the situation on the driver side (left).
But it is the same on both sides/mirrors of the car, so it is not just one misaligned mirror housing.

Is this a known issue and any idea how to fix,so no additional scratches will be caused?

Somehow I can't seem to understand where this picture was taken from. Is that the top of the mirror or the area it sits on. I looked at mine today and can't see any reason that could damage it unless something abrades it. Do you use a car wash that has the flaps contact the car as with those the mirrors seem to take a lot more abuse. It looks like something was done to damage the mirrors .

Here is a photo of a mirror... I think he is seeing scratches in this area, where the mirror folds over the mounting part...

Yes, thanks! It is exactly this are on top of the mirror fixing.

I don’t use automatic car washes.
One theory is that it could be salt from our winter roads that has an abrasive effect here.

OK I see it now. I guess the reason I don't have it is because I park the car for a few months in the winter. I would rinse it good under there and maybe see if you can compound the out the scratches

Yep just gone out in my dressing gown and checked mine...yes they are there and 50% more on the drivers than passenger side.

Now I'll not be able to sleep at nights!!!

Perhaps some silicon lube on that bit may aid mirror movement and minimise future damage.

Ter, you mention salt on roads but crucially you don't have your location shown (as everyone else on this thread does), be a good chap and add it please??

Sorry to cause you sleepless nights 😁.
I am located in Switzerland. Let me see if I can find the correct profile settings to add this fact to my signature.

Though very faint, mine has some marks there as well. They are so small one really has to look closely in order to see them.

Perhaps as (now officially) Swiss Ter advises more marked (see what I did there??) in colder climes where salt/grit can get under there and abrade.

Ter is yours garaged or out in the elements like mine?

I'll ensure I jet it off frequently with my worx hydroshot, but will be applying some silicon spray protection once I wash later

Mine is garaged when parked. But I drive it all year around with climate sometimes below freezing point.

I have scuff marks on both my mirrors in that spot also, not nearly as large as you have shown.
