Default Front suspension?

2007 XK 99,000 miles

I just bought 4 new wheels because the other were either bent or I had to have repaired and just figured it was time. I also bought new tires. I have some things going on with the front end. There is a clunking sound even over very small bumps. I probably won't explain this next part correctly but I'll try. I'm hearing my front left shock/strut and it's pushing in all the way so it's more of a jolt than cushion.(hopefully that makes sense) It's not bad but I do notice it over bigger intersections. I also have already replaced that tire twice after buying a new one. I keep getting "a bubble" and they're telling me I'm hitting pot holes. Normally my wife drives the XK but I've been driving it to make sure the new wheels and tires are good. I know for a fact I haven't hit any potholes. He also showed me on the tire where it looks like the fender came down and rubbed it. I'm guessing my strut/shock is gone and it doesn't have the cushion on that side now. I've done about everything on a car but haven't done the suspension.(I have done the suspension on my Rover). Is that something I can do myself and does anyone have some they recommend. Also, not sure if that would cause the clunking sound but I've checked all the normal culprits and haven't found anything.

How the heck can I tell if I have adaptive damping on my suspension? I'm going to guess I do only because the replacement shocks are more expensive, lol.

There is a wiring harness that connects to the top of each strut, if the vehicle has adaptive damping.

Damnitt, you would know my XK has it. Is that something my wife needs or can I get away with buying the normal shock and disconnecting the electronics on it?

What is the cost difference? $200 for a pair of the correct front struts doesn’t seem bad to me.

Use the correct parts for the vehicle.

Have the vehicle inspected further prior to purchasing any parts. The front lower control arm inner bushes and upper damper seat/spring isolator can also be worn with that many miles and age of the vehicle.
