Default Fuel filler warning message on dash

So just filled up, and after properly screwing the fuel cap on, three clicks, the dash message below popped up. Deleted it, and redid the cap, no joy.
Multiple re-screwing the cap, still got a fresh message.

Anybody have any idea where to turn next? Could it just be coincidental, that this began, immediately after a fuel stop?

Maybe just a new fuel cap?

I dunno, looks like it didn't like being filled to the brim - maybe driving and the fuel level goes down it will clear.

My one kid had that, I had him coat the cap seal and filler neck top edge with a bit of vaseline. The fault hasn't come back (yet).

worth a try.

Will I need to disconnect the battery, to fully clear the triangle?

After a fix attempt, the fault must be cleared. Either a battery disconnect or have anyone with a code reader clear the CEL. Waitaminute.... That's not a CEL or a DTC......
To clear any dash warning like that, look at the bottom-right area of the TSD. There will be a little red triangle there also. Touch that, and a message appears. Touch "Clear" and the dash warning disappears. It's like that for all dash messages.

Thanks. I have already done the message clear routine.
But, there is a small triangle, that remains on the dash, after clearing the “ message”.

a simple battery disconnect for a few seconds should clear it?

if that triangle remains, I am assuming that the “message” gets triggered
every time the car is started.

Okay, yeah, that.
Since you're THAT far into it though, disconnect BOTH cables and touch them together for a few seconds AVOIDING the battery completely. This will discharge all the volatile memory in some modules. That is called a Hard Reset. Remember it for whey you have weird things happening.

I’ve not done a “hard reset” yet. You promise that the car won’t catch fire and explode

I promise that I've done it many times and my car has not caught fire nor exploded.
Many others in this forum have also done it. It's actually in the Manual.

Great, I will do it this weekend, and report results back here.
Thanks again, appreciate all of the response.

It's written in the service manual and common practice. Remove negative cable first, then positive. Hold the two cables together away from the battery (I just throw a towel over the battery to be sure). Thirty seconds will do. What this does is ground out all the capacitors within the various modules, thereby setting them back to their original state. It doesn't guarantee your problem will be solved, but it's worth a try. When finished, attach the positive cable first, then the negative.

If that fails, grab an Autel AP200 off Amazon for $70. Download the Jag software and then clear the code. Cheaper than a dealer.

Thanks Sean, doing it today.
i love this forum, as it never disappoints, with knowledgeable and clear advice.

Btw, my reply to Cee Jay was really tongue in cheek. Levity is always a challenge on the inter-web.

Thanks to Sean, Cee Jay and all of you for helping with this. I did a “ hard reset”, and it cleared the fuel door message triangle. We did a 350 mile weekend, and it has not reared it head again.

The only hiccup with the hard reset, is that on my first engine start up, I got a loud beeping, while the car was moving. If I stopped, the beeper stopped. Apparently, it was a warning noise, for the emergency brake. An engine restart, and emergency brake on/off, cleared that. It did not seem like the brake was actually “on”, as the car motored along fine. I think it was just the warning beeper got triggered by the battery hard reset.

Again, thanks all, my fast cat is all well again.

John
