Default Grunt when steering column auto adjusts

On my ‘11 XK I periodically hear a noticeable short 2 second buzzy grunt when the steering column either takes it memory position or auto retracts. Any idea if this represents impending failure of the electric mechanism. Is there a DIY fix? It has not gotten worse over the past couple years and remains fully functional.
Thanks

Bumping because my new to me car has the same issue, just curious what it is/means.

Hope someone can help!

Mine has the same sounds in the column when weather is warm. I seem to remember somewhere on the forum it was discussed and determined to be a bearing in the column that had to be replaced. My impression was that it would be a significantly involved fix and not worthwhile since it only bothered me anyway.

I don't have mine on Auto Entry and I'm the only driver, so MY steering wheel never moves regardless. It could scream like a Banshee when it moved and I'd never know.

This might be my solution. Great point

It sounds very much like the situation with a jetbridge to me (Strange association, I know)
As the Jetbridge settles the automatic leveling system will adjust to previously set levels. Take it off 'automatic' I I think you may be happier.

Thanks for the information. It's an odd short unattractive noise that I've been actually ignoring for years. Like most of us, I'd prefer this gizzmo to work as intended and silently but possibly it is best just to disappointingly turn it off automatic.

@DocDsXK , the joys of leaving the mainstream and following this righteous path of XK Jaguar ownership.
Its not for the faint hearted or weak ;-)

Ha, guess I am not as sensitive as you guys. Sure, my steering wheel gives a groan when it moves and my steering shudders at low speed when I first start the car. It also smells like coolant all the time even though the coolant level hasn't changed in years and has been pressure tested 3 times by 2 different dealers. Not to mention it has the worst infotainment compared to, well, I would say modern car but really any car, not that it matters as all I car about is whether it can play music or navigate the Wifey when she is lost (which can be at any time).

Best car I have ever owned. Ain't gonna sweat the small stuff.

The steering wheel groan is not due to a jetbridge settling issue, it will groan under manual or automatic movement equally. Yet it moves just fine, like anything that becomes the norm I cease to notice it anymore.

Well, heck. When I first saw this post I went out and checked my switch, it was "OFF" or whatever. I guess it WASN'T, because I noticed it moved the first time I got in. Also, it didn't make any noise whatsoever.
Cool!

Mine used to "groan", not any more. When it was under warranty I had the dealer correct it. What it took was some kind of lubrication.
