JackJon - do you mean like this?
AMERICAN GUMBALL RALLY

There are still similar things especially on motorcycles like "LDriders", "Ironbutt" rides, but auto clubs have them too they just try to not advertise that they'll be exceeding the speed limits attracting cops like flies.

A few years ago a guy I know set the world record for miles driven in a short time, of course highly exceeding the speed limits - Have more on this but check out the numbers!

"Warchild" did a documented 7 straight Bun Burner Golds (1500 miles in less than 24 hours) to set a major endurance record on his CBR XX.

Oregon has some magnificent twisty back roads, but be forewarned. A couple years ago about six exotic cars were running 100+ caravan in Western OR. While the roads are deserted, there is habitation along these roads; and locals called 911 to report this caravan. Oregon State Patrol is a bit **** about speeding. They set up a roadblock and bagged each and every car at 100+, which in OR requires handcuffs, a trip to see the judge and $1000 minimum fine. Party over.
