Headliner replacement - leather or suede?
hi all, recently I am going to reupholster my XK interior, and my choice for leather is one red leather called lipstick red, which I think is just amazing!
I visited a shop and the owner showed me one kind of red suede (just a swatch) that is used for headliner, and probably can match the leather red color, but I think there are some high end cars that have leather headliner, so now I have to make a choice.
since I haven't seen the real suede materiel I don't know if the color is acceptable, and I googled online and there are posts said that those suede used for car interior are actually called ' street suede ', which is synthetic not natural, but it is more durable. The owner said this kind of suede is used for rolls royces, Bentley etc, but I don't know if it is truly high quality.
I mean if I use the exact same red leather for headliner then there is no color match problem and the material quality is gonna be the same. Just wonder if anyone has seen any high end cars that have leather headliner, does is look good?
any suggestions are welcome

I think getting the leather to stick and lay correctly around the visors and center lamp housing will be very difficult. I assume we're talking about a coupe as well. I'm not a big fan of the suede due to how the colors shift so drastically when you rub your hand across it. I'd be constantly petting the headliner as it would drive me nut.
I re-did mine with suede. I love it. Not sure what they call was on there but the replacement is very close in feel (even a little "plushier") and exact in color.
Leather would be cool but what Ranchero said....

From an acoustic standpoint its a no-brainer.

Interesting as I have the leather headliner option ($900) in my 2012 XKR convert. It's in the car and on my window sticker.
I have the alcantara suede on my headliner on my 2010 XKR, and last week I sent another forum member 4 yards of Passion Suede to redo his headliner and A pillars. It is every bit as nice and so inexpensive, under $10/running yard, width is 60". Depending on the source I buy it from, I pay anywhere from $5.00-10.00/yd, and it is available in over 100 colors. The other forum member used color oyster which he said matched his interior very well. If I can help you in any way, just let me know.

the color is is called lipstick red, my favorite
also want to know if your suede is synthetic or natural?
thx
The "suede" is a woven synthetic suede, not cow skin. And yes, it comes in a bright red. If you p.m. your address, I'll pick up samples of the reds available and mail them to you. Then you can compare the colors to your leather, side by side.
@tberg,
Do you know if anyone has ever produced a color chart that matches Alcantra colors to Jaguar leathers? I'm looking for a color match to my Caramel interior and am struggling with the guess work that is involved with trying to match it.

Do you recall our Maserati had a real Camel suede headliner. It was in retrospect a bad idea, it was real heavy, even before it got saturated with humidity.
pwpacp,
Last week I picked up color Oyster, which is like a dirty beige color for forum member sovietkitsch, to match his XJ's interior. I had sent him some samples in advance, and he picked the closest one. When he received the actual fabric, he messaged me how good the match was. Having used thousands of yards over the years in my interior decorating work, I have several sources in downtown Los Angeles for this product, and if I can help anyone out by getting samples and sending them, I'm more than happy to do so.
