Default How Accurate is CarFAX ?

When I bought my 2010 XK Convertible, it was listed as a Portfolio on CarFAX.
It's not on the tiltle and nowhere else on the car can I find the name.
It does have some options that are in the description of a Portfolio in Nigel Thorley book Jaguar XK/XKR
No big deal, just curious.

My 2014 was ordered and invoiced as a Signature. However, JLR insist it is a Portfolio:

I gave up on enquiries as it appears model names are more for marketing purposes than an accurate reflection of vehicle specification.

Carfax is not any way to buy. Its only what is reported. So anything could be incorrect. What the factory says is what will determine its fate.

How accurate is CarFax?

In my opinion, CarFax is a great resource for deciding to NOT buy a particular vehicle when it discloses fatal flaws, such as collision or flood damage or a salvage title.

However, under no circumstances should you ever rely on CarFax to buy any vehicle. That's because the Carfax report isn't worth the paper it's printed on, since their Terms and Conditions of Use EXPRESSLY AND CONSPICUOUSLY disclaim any warranties, express or implied. Read the full CarFax Terms and Conditions here:
https://www.carfax.com/company/terms-of-use

Bottom line: You can't rely on CarFax to buy any vehicle. But CarFax can provide good reasons to not buy it.

...... and what the factory says is not consistent across engineering and marketing.

The Build Sheet is the most accurate source but this is now only available through TOPIx subscription.

My little tidbit about Car Fax. I purchased a used 2001 Hyundai Sonata at a local Ford dealer. I looked the car over, and found a small paint run near the headlight. And inside way up under the passenger side of the dash, you could see green overspray on the top edge of the carpet. So I asked how much $7995. Kelly Blue Book price. I told him I'm not giving full price for a wrecked car. Oh no that car hasn't been wrecked! so I showed him the paint run by the headlight. He says oh, that's touch up paint. I told him to go get his sales manager. The manager came out and says that car hasn't been wrecked, I've got a clean Car Fax! on it. I told him I don't care what you've got, Then I opened the passenger front door, and told him to look up under the dash. I said I don't think they painted the carpet at the factory! He stood up looked at me and said, I've got $5401.00 in it. I said I'll take it.

Car Fax is only a tool. Liars and cheats know how to get around them. And the world is full of liars and cheats especially in the car business.

In the US, was the base model even offered on the 5.0 cars? I have a 2011 US brochure (attached) and it just has one XK and one XKR. Both seem to be fairly equivalent to the European XK Portfolio and the XKR R-Performance specs respectively. If that was the case, any additional labeling would be superfluous.

Also helpful but you gotta pay $10 per report.

(For me, carmax is good for: in-service date, where it's been garaged, how many owners.)

I have perfect carfax on both my XKRs. Both have had extensive paint work. It's really good paintwork, but you with a good inspection will know it has been done. I trust that when bad stuff is listed, the bad is probably good info to have. I don't trust when it's a clean carfax.

Use Carfax as a piece of info but nothing replaces talking to people and setting eyes on stuff.

I agree that carfax is better for "run away" than "well taken care of". It's only one more factoid in a used car purchase, along with carefully examining paint with a meter, dates of tires and battery, checking VINs on all major assemblies that have them, full maintenance records (a requirement) and an inspection by a pro. Also, never accept a carfax given to you by a seller -- always get one from CF directly. I've found manipulated (edited) printouts. So, it's a piece, not the answer.

They say Jag is 2012+, so limiting for the XK series. Could be great data if it applies.

My Carfax story is that a few years ago I bought a car that showed Minor front end damage 3 years prior to my purchase. The car was fine during my ownership. A couple years later when trading that car in, the dealer pulled the car fax on it and that original incident now showed accident with major damage and airbags deployed! He still gave me a decent value for it, but I was obviously not happy about that revelation. Don't know if Carfax or the original dealer were to blame or both. But I would agree with said above, run the Carfax yourself, don't rely on a dealer giving it to you.

Similar for me. Dealer handed me a CF with two previous owners. I ran my own and found 4. Yes, they edit them, hoping you won't run your own.

Decide if you're interested enough to get your own, but never, ever trust a dealer's version.

And don’t forget that many dealers and repair shops simply don’t participate in CarFax.

If you're relying on a clean CarFax to buy a car, you can't say you weren't warned. See my Post #4, above.

A clean CarFax is not worth the paper it's printed on, and is no substitute for your own due diligence.
