It's a long time since I've posted here, but I still stop by to read what's going on occasionally. Some of you might remember that two years ago one of the valve seats on the left cylinder head came loose and that cylinder had zero compression. The engine wouldn't keep running, so I had the car towed to the dealer. They told me it would cost about $18,000 for them to repair it.
I had it towed to my house and I intended to do it myself. I'm a wee bit handy, so I figured I could do it on my own and save $16,000 to $17,000. I got the supercharger and the valve cover off, and I bought a bunch of specialized tools. But it was the middle of summer and my garage isn't air conditioned. It was sweltering. I decided to stop work until it cooled off a little, then I bought a Tesla Model S.
Well the Tesla made me completely lose interest in the Jaguar. I love both cars, but the Tesla is way more practical. And faster. And roomier. And it has better technology. And it's waaaayyyyy cheaper to operate. I keep thinking I'll start on the Jag again this weekend. That's been going on for 2 years. I don't want to sell it, but at the same time I'm thinking it would be nice to have my garage back. I've thought about renting a storage unit and having it towed there, but if I do that I'll definitely never get motivated to work on it.
So then I started looking online for a 2003 convertible XK8, and They are beautiful. That's what got me into Jaguars. I love the look, and when I had my XK8 I was the bees knees driving around town. So now I'm thinking about buying another 2003-2006 XK8, and if I do that I'll definitely need my garage.
Anyway, I haven't made a decision yet, but if I do decide to sell the XKR, how much is it worth with ~105,000 miles on the odometer and a partially disassembled engine? The body and interior are in great shape.
Here's a picture of that rascally valve seat. The ring in that right intake port is the seat and it's preventing the valve from closing. The left intake port is closed.
Welcome back. Pictures of the interior and exterior would be helpful. Owning a Model S and X100 would be having 2 cars from different planets. Drove a Model 3 Dual Motor the other day. Fast and lots of creative engineering. Saw a "drunk" Tesla the other day. Various windows up and down at random speeds. Lights flashing. Stereo blaring 1812 Overture or something. Apparently you can tell the car to do this. Better than anything Lucas Electronics could ever do.
That’s gonna be a tough sell. Gotta be low enough for someone to take a chance on it.
Don’t know what you paid, or how much of a ‘bath’ you’re willing to take, but $10k would probably be on the high end.
Sorry @Reverend Sam , not worth the cost of transport and duty for me. I can find this very situation local... and they wouldn't like to hear my offer.
Unless you want to take a bath on it, you'll have to get it running before you sell it. It's just labor though, mostly.
Maybe check around and see if you can find an enterprising person who will take it apart for 'cheap'? I did that once a long time ago for my wife's Lincoln LS. The timing chain slipped and shops wanted over $6k to fix it. I paid a guy $1,500 to do the work and I paid for parts. It worked out great. Then wifey sold it.
