My heated steering wheel does heat up - but so anemically that you might miss it if you touched it. That is, it is barely noticeable. It takes the chill off, but I would not say that it makes it warm. This is in contrast to our other cars with the feature (non-jags) where the wheel gets comfortably (and noticeably) warm to the touch.
Before I go trying to fix it - I need to know if this is how they came from the factory, or if I have a problem. I did a search on the forum for "heated steering wheel" and nothing relevant came up (apologies if this has been discussed and I missed it).
So - how warm does your heated steering wheel get?
Mine gets quite warm, and I turn it off after it warms up. Now I’ve got a 2007 with the wood trimmed wheel, so maybe the wood contributes to the heat transfer.
I must say that my XK wheel heats at what I consider at the right place, at the top of the wheel,so my 11:00 and 1:00 grip points get warm. Not so with my Lexus, which heats at the 3:00 and 9:00 positions, so my grip points don’t get warm.
Mine gets comfortably warm, but often I'll notice that it turns itself off, and when I look at the symbol on the dash display it is turned off. It will restart again after I press the digital button another time.
My 2009 XKR Portfolio is the top-of-the-line model, and it is equipped with two rare options - Adaptive Cruise Control and the Alcon Performance Brake Package. I am puzzled why the heated steering wheel was not standard equipment or available as an option on the any 2009 XKR Portfolio.
Does anyone know why the heated steering wheel was not available on the 2009 XKR Portfolio?
Does anyone know which heated steering wheel below is correct for Adaptive Cruise Control? I suspect it's the last one - C2P18912RGB with R Performance (Alcons?), but I'm not sure. If it were fitted, could be activated using the Jaguar SDD and CCF without causing any other problems?
My '07 model had an optional wood and leather steering wheel($1000)!. When I bought the XKR I swapped them because I wanted to keep it!
sigh.... Now that I've chosen to part with the XKR instead, I have to switch them back!
Kinda love my wood wheel!
I've had my heated steering wheel off, and it's not a case of turning a module on in the SDD. There's 2 metal clips that stick out with the clock spring (not a part of the clock spring, but next to it). These 2 clips touch a channel that is bolted to the back of the steering wheel.
If you wanted this in your car, you would have to find the wiring loom and "metal clips" from an newer XK. Not an easy job imho.
But if you wanted a heating steering wheel with the adaptive option i have mine laying about!
I had a heated steering wheel retrofitted on the 2007 XK. All it took was a new (heated, look for a metal contact ring around the hole for the steering column) steering wheel, the heated steering wheel power module that contacts the aforementioned metal ring (C2C7505, photos), and activating the feature via SDD in engineering mode. Here's a thread with more information.

Tell me about it...My LS600h has a heated semi-wooden steering wheel, but indeed only the 3:00 and 9:00 positions. It's quite terrible moving your hands from the warm leather to the cold wood. I have heard, though, that F Sport models have an all-leather steering wheel which is heated all around the rim. Quite odd, considering how Jaguar and Land Rover have offered heated wooden steering wheels for ages.

All things considered, including the number of days of really cold weather here in Atlanta, the benefit isn't worth the cost. I'll just drive the XJ with its heated steering wheel on those days. Also, I'm not sure if I can find a local indy with access to Engineering Mode. It's not worth the effort.

Thanks to all for the details.
It's certainly a nice feature on an only car, but if you have a warmer-wheeled alternative as nice as an XJ available, not worth the hassle.
Spoiler
Engineering Mode access is easily arranged, but it's best not to go into detail on a public forum.
On my 2009 XK, the colder it is... the warmer the wheel gets. In moderate temperatures I would swear that it isn't even working, but when temps dip much below 40F or so, I can really feel the heater kicking in. It never gets really hot, but certainly nice and warm.
