I need a bike rack for XK R?
#4
that's the reason i want a receiver hitch mount - not really for a bike mount - well yes a bike mount but it will have no bike on it. i want to use it for experimenting with lazer jammers and anti radar devices as well as video taping. the jag is a chase car sort of for some fun i have sometimes with others.

tomorrow i am going by a aluminum welding shop to see what they can rig up - i have found a flat plate under the car at the rear slightly off center from the middle of the car. maybe i can get them to make a bracket which will bolt in place with a quick disconnect and build a mounting rack for me so i can mount cameras, cb antennas, and lazer jammers and radar detectors up in the air just above the trunk and over the rear wheel fender buldge. i will post pics as i play around with this, i think there is no way to mount a legitimate trailer hitch to the xk r cause of its alum construction? m

I have one that fits - but only works for convertibles. If you look at it from the side it looks like a "T". The parts that touch the car have large bumpers so it doesn't scratch. There are two adjustable straps that have rubber-coated hooks that fit into the trunk seam. I haven't attached bikes to my XK, but use it on my XJ frequently (me and 2 kids). Now that the kids are a little older and have become too "sophisticated" to ride bikes with their dad, I might start using the XK. I have no idea who made it, I've had it for 20 years and there's no logo on it. I guess I'm not much help.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) a roof rack isn't an option for a convertible. I thought about the trunk mount option, I've used one for many years on my Lexus, but I just don't want to take that chance on the XK.
I'll try prototyping my own solution, and find a local welder to make the real thing.
There are holes in the underside of the body, on both sides (outside the width of the exhaust system). So I think I can make use of those, plus the offset tow hook location, to securely mount a bar, to which a receiver could be welded (I'm thinking 1 1/4 instead of 2", just to keep it less noticeable).
Won't get around to this until spring time, but I had hoped someone might have done this already.

If you get a hitch, there are a number of racks that will work. My father-in-law has a factory here in Los Angeles where he manufactures bike racks for many different cars with and without hitch connections. They are very high quality and the only ones being made in the U.S.
You can see them at Surco, Inc. where there are five different models on the website. If I can help you by gettting some pamphlet literature, just let me know, and I'll ask him to bring some home with him. My wife sees him every Saturday.
