Default Inaccurate Fuel Gauge

Good Easter morning! On my 2011 XKR, the "Range" selection (which is supposed to reflect number of miles before the car runs out of gas) of my odometer seems to be registering fewer miles than it used to upon fill-up. It used to register about 300 miles (immediately after I fill it up), but that number has been descending. Now it's about 195-200. The car seems to accept about the same amount of fuel in the tank as it always did. Any thoughts or ideas?

happy easter! has the MPG estimate also changed accordingly? i think the first culprit is usually the O2 sensors going bad or getting so thoroughly fouled that the signal sent to engine management is far from reality. it then meters extra fuel to "correct" a lean condition that doesn't exist.

Hi, Jons, and thanks for your reply. I don't know if the MPG estimate as also changed, but I'll look into that . . .

yes, it would be worthwhile to know precisely the average mpg the car is reporting per tank, with a comparison to the trip miles per tank.
I thought the calculated range is based on this learned data.
Of course, the feature of Auto gives me the information I like to view from the time of engine start.
To keep an eye on the behaviors and health of the car, like many of you, I reset Trip A on every tank and Trip B on every oil change.
Also as all of you, I have a very large discrepancy between the average mpg on quick trips within the city and those longer country drives.
Let alone the situation whereby I use cruise control and when I don’t.

Thanks, Guy. The linkage between MPG and "range" makes sense . .. .

The car DOES change to match your driving style. If you're always hard on the throttle then the displays will reflect such behavior. Disconnect the battery and either let it stay that way for many minutes or touch the DISCONNECTED cables together for a few seconds. Everything will reset to "stock".
