Instrument Cluster Removal and Screen Replacement
I've attached a full guide to removing the instrument cluster and also obtaining and replacing the instrument LCD screen. Much of the information has been gleaned from other members here on the site and to them I say 'thank you very much'! Using that information I was able to remove my own cluster and replace the screen. Previously I had contacted over 15 instrument cluster repair companies in the US and UK. None in the US seemed entirely comfortable with making the repair and while some would offer to cannibalize a used cluster, none was in a position to obtain or offer a new screen. Also, none seemed capable of reprogramming a used cluster (VIN, Odometer, Security Codes) and I was told it was necessary to have the car present to do this. None of the dealers I contacted in Houston were willing to replace the screen, and they certainly were not willing to attempt to reprogram a used cluster. Totaltronics (UK) was the only company I found who seemed confident in replacing the screen, however they never answered my specific question about whether they used new or used screens. Frankly I was also very concerned about sending my cluster out to be repaired and having it lost or damaged. Given the immobilization circuit in the car this would cause no end of problems. Re reprogramming a used screen I found two specialist shops in Houston who have the equipment and software to do it but both said in their experience it was risky - sometimes it works, sometimes the car just won't accept a different cluster, and sometimes the car will accept the cluster but the odometer setting can't be changed and new remote keys are required.
After having replaced the screen a couple of times now (to test a used and a new screen) I can say it should only take about 20-30 minutes to remove the cluster from the car, 30-45 minutes or so to disassemble the cluster, replace the screen and reassemble, and then 30 minutes to reinstall the screen into the car. It was all surprisingly easy. Removing the tach and speedometer needles was the only part that required some care.
