While the number probably bums you out, it’s probably a good number in reality. The KBB value is around $23K for an excellent condition car in a private sale.
The insurance companies, unfortunately won’t pay us what we think our cars are worth.

 

Yeah, sad to say but a good one can be had for about $28k with half your mileage. Course taxes and fees bring it up a bit more, past your 28,800 mark.
You can always TRY for more, do a search for all the ones for sale that are above their offer and provide that info. Tell them that it is totally IMPOSSIBLE to find a similar vehicle in similar condition for the low amount they offer.
Also, try eBay motors and use the COMPLETED LISTING filter to find the ones that sold.
You're in LA also, so a lot more possibilities to even FIND a similar ride. Me in Utah, there aren't any within 350 miles at all. One in Vegas, but it looks a bit ragged out.

Last year I bought my 2010 XK Portfolio Convert. w/ 51K miles for $22K out the door. I would rate the car as very good to excellent.
I insured it through Hagerty Insu. for "agreed to value" for 25K.
Your offer looks pretty good to me.

 

Ok....im going to be the outlier. They are light by a few grand. With that said I dont know your milage which has a factor on value.

Insurance companies always throw out a low number hoping you will bite. Come back with comps of real cars for sale in your area to bolster your case. They know KBB is crap in todays market and hope you dont notice until after you accept the first offer.

We all consider 100k miles kind of high, but in actuality for a 2011, that's only 2/3rds of the 'normal' mileage expected.

 

Reading is fundamental. In that case, take the money and run.

 

I think this is a case where you need to think with your head, and common sense, and not your heart. Almost $29,000 for a 12 year old car, with over 100,000 miles. Seems quite reasonable, especially with what everyone else has said. Sounds like a reasonable offer. Ask yourself, what was it worth a year or so ago, before prices went through the roof???? Just my thoughts.

I have no expertise on how insurance works and what not but several years ago my brother was in a car accident and was offered 15k initially but after a handful of emails they bumped the offer up to 30k. The insurance company doubled the price for pretty much asking! So I say why not try to get more money unless you don’t want to deal with the hassle.

 

It's a game, and that's their opening offer. You can probably squeeze another 10-15% out of them or more, but you'll need to prove it. You can pay a professional auto appraiser for a report that includes comparable sales nearby, but that'll cost around $500 or maybe more. Is it worth your time and effort? Time is money.

 

Ask for more, what can it hurt.

 

What Stuart said. You can try on your own and they'll likely ask you to justify why but with an independent certified appraiser's seal of authority your insurance's likely to improve their offer. However, their offer is better than I expected. You can always ask but I wouldn't be too offended by their number.

 

It looks to me like they have made a fair and reasonable offer. What were you expecting?

you can ask, sure but he will need support. I went thru this with Geico years ago and they were actually really good about it. Easiest to get is recent sales or listed similar cars from the many online auto sales services. If you have just a few that are over their offer that might be good enough to get them up a little. I also had an independent appraisal but I got it for free. I wouldn't pay for one if you have a few listings that are more than their offer. The other thing they asked for was receipts of recent repairs. I was mid restoration on an '86 Mustang GT so I had a bunch of receipts. All that together got them up to over what the car was worth.

Certainly worth a try if you haven't done this already. but IMO, $29k is a pretty good start.

if it's paid off and you getting that much back,drop all that on a down payment for a 2015
