Default Interior fan will not slow down

Hi. The interior fan in my 2007 XK suddenly runs at full speed at all times. When I try to turn it down manually the display shows that it should run slower as expected, but the fan itself blasts on at full speed. I had a similar issue with a BMW many years ago, turned out to be a resistor that needed replacement. I have seen a post on replacing the AC control unit, but the AC works fine and reacts correctly to different temperature settings, so I guess this is not the culprit, but I may of course be wrong about this.
Has anybody out there experienced this issue and fixed it? I would appreciate any help.

It sounds like a resistor problem. Have you ever had the "duckbill" issue?

No, and everything around the fan and in the footwell is dry. No corrosion around the fan.

With a 2007, you could have had water backed up from the duckbill, but didn’t overflow into the passenger footwell. There’s a thread here about the resistor replacement. IIRC, it’s pretty cheap and easy to do.

Edit: Here it is:
